Savage .22 take down

Everything is worth fixing but be careful , to much fixing can ruin value..... Old guns are just that , old guns...That being said it's hard to not go overboard once you get started or at least for me it is... First thing to do is find some kind of value for the rifle so you know what you have got... I do things backwards , if it's not a hard to find piece and I like it I will go the extra mile to make it nice because you don't have much to lose... If it's an expensive piece then you have to be careful with it or you can kill it's resale value... There's some good places that sale new old stock...

What Mr. Adams said.

Fix it for what reason. For yourself as a memento or fix it for resale? Not that valuable of a gun unless it means something to you.

In 1957 (or so) I shot a rifle for the first time. It was a 1912, 22 cal Remington model 12, take down similar to yours and I was about 5 y/o. As I remember we only shot it a few times before it quit working. It was never fired again until today when I shot it at 50 yds. I'd recently restored it, ordering parts from Numrich and then waiting several months for Covid quarantines to end, finally getting them last week.

The restoration was for my education and experience, more so than any added value, but it came out sweet. Despite having a very rusted bore when I looked at it carefully for the first time in over half a century, it cleaned up well, and shot amazingly well.

I refinished the wood, blued the steel where it'd been worn off from use, and as I mentioned, replaced a broken firing pin and other parts. I also purchased a new barrel for it and may do the swap later, just for the experience.

Your stock is likely repairable, maybe even available in good used, original condition. Rust is easily removed via chemical or electrolysis methods, and new or original parts may be available online.

I say give it a go! After all, what's the worst that can happen?

Lol , the first rifle stock I ever did was an hand rubbed tung oil finish and I did it on an SKS and I even said , what's the worst that could happen... No matter what it has to be better than it was starting out.... Sometimes you don't have much to lose and everything to gain.... BTW it turned out great...

I love the many old 22's that were manufactured "back in the day". I've got a few, and always looking for more. I don't want to restore them, just clean them up and get them functional. I'll only remove rust with oil and bronze brush, leaving any blue and patina that exists. Stocks are repaired if needed, but not sanded or refinished -- just oiled/cleaned with BLO.

I guess this one is my favorite, and best shooter. It's over a hundred years in age, and I wonder how many boys may have loved and used this rifle. I just happen to be the boy who has it for now. jd
