savage 12fv - updated with 80 grain 70 vld

I got it back from savage and it came with 2 piece bases (I had to put my own base on originally, a one piece that I hated) and they rebuilt and put new barrel on the gun. I didn't think the scope would fit because how much shorter the bases are but it worked out pretty nicely. I grabbed some 75 gr match hornady and also made up some 68 and 75 gr hand loads. Used a few factory to get me on paper again and moved on to the hand loads. I did the OCW with 5 different loads of each bullet weight, 3 rounds each. I'm going to stick with the 75 gr and see how much better I can get it. Definitely happy with savage right now! Scope is just a Cabelas brand 8-32x50 with 30 mm tube and burris XTR rings. Leupold sun shade fit the threads which surprised me. Stock is from B&C

75 gr

68 gr - I forgot to move windage before starting so right side groups were on edge of paper/ off paper.

Re: savage 12fv

Nice looking rifle. Keep us updated on what you find is your best load for that particular rifle.

I am using reloder 15 for now since I have 3 lbs of it.

Fotheringill - If I had to take a guess, I'd say its most likely my powder charge being slightly off. I use a beam scale and I feel like a few granules move it sometimes, and other times it doesn't.

Re: savage 12fv

Made it up again this weekend. I narrowed down a little more, 23.9 grains of rl15 behind the 75 match bthp seemed to be the ticket. 5 shot groups this time. best was .465" on bottom right. the first 3 loads seemed to spread a little more. just me and my buddy up so we had all the benches taken up. surprisingly nice weather for once.

Re: savage 12fv

Looking much better.
Where are you shooting with that sparkling white sand in the background? I would love to be there.

Referencing the bolded part above. All these things are interchangeable and standard, provided you have the correct filter size. So, screw-in sun shades, filters and so on should all fit given the proper diameter; the thread pitch is standard in the optics industry. I can take filters that I use on my camera lenses and screw them into the same diameter rifle scope lens.

The difficulty is figuring out the filter size of your lens. All camera lenses list their filter size; the same is not true for riflescopes. The diameter of an objective is one thing, the filter size of the scope is another. The latter will be larger than the former usually by 4-6mm.

Re: savage 12fv

I live in southeastern pa. We had a pretty mild winter so far. I'm headed up again this Sunday, supposed to be mid 40s.i want to try it out at 200 yards and see what I get.

Re: savage 12fv, updates and confusion

This gun is still confusing me. I set my seater to load at 2.300" and they still vary up to .010", assuming the bullet. But yesterday they left dents around the top of bullet after seating. The whole way around, where the plunger touches. And they measured 2.299-2.314". I loaded 3 sets of 5, all with 23.7 gr rl15 behind 75 gr hornady v max. I decided to try factory 69 smk from winchester out of curiousity. Didn't shoot as well but shot better than hornday 68 gr. So on my way home i grabbed some 70 gr berger vld to try out too. But anyways, when I was shooting my loads, they chambered a little harder, and when i ejected it to see why, i could see it contacting lands... which didn't happen last time I went up. Maybe that extra pressure during seating changed shape of bullet (while leaving that ring)? Neither thing ever happened on the first 75 ish bullets i loaded. So i shot 3 sets at 200 yards and ended up with this as best group. Measured .7195, damn flier. Im out of 75 grain hornady so I'll call it a wrap on that. I'll try these 70 vld, some 80 vld a buddy is bringing me and i'd like to find some 77 vld as well.

who's saeating die are you useing, and what did you use to find the lands
l e wilson seater, sinclair measuring tool. this chamber is pretty short, a full .1 shorter than first barrel :(

Re: savage 12fv

I'm assuming you are measuring from tip of bullet to head of case, a lot of bullets can vary as much as .010 that's why it's best to meassure from ogive it is more constant measure ment, the sinclair tool is a good one I have it also have the hornady, make sure you HAVE THAT TEFLON INSERT IN THE CHAMBER IN THE right direction, I use a comparator once I seat to make sure they are all the same, and I use the comparator to seperate my bullets by ogive to base of bullet, your .7 at 200 is good .5 is 1/4 moa it seems you will be shooting that real soon.

Re: savage 12fv

Yeah i hope so too. That teflon insert hates me. I almost always do it upside down the first time, and catch myself. I'm wondering if i should try some powder other than the rl15 as well. but so far it's treating me well

Re: savage 12fv

just measured and I can seat the 80 grain at 2.420 so i'll give those a try. the 70s didn't vary much in OAL from the 68 hornady. I'll see how these do and go from there.

Re: savage 12fv - updated with 70 vld and 80 smk

Loaded 80s touching the lands at 2.430 and the 70 vlds in lands about .014 because the short throat. Both shot well I thought for first time around. I'm getting a hold of more 80s to see if seating them .010 deeper (off lands) will change anything. Same with the vlds. Waining for the 75 vld from grafs to ship out so i can try them too.
So far it's favored the 75 hornady v max with 23.7 gr rl15 but today might have changed which bullet i go with. I'm really looking forward to those 75 vld.
Plan right now is to load more of the top 2 loads for 80 gr and more of the top right, center and bottom left of the 70s. Paper target is 80 gr and shoot n see target is 70 gr. Bottom left of the 70s, shot 1,2,3, all went in a .215" hole, 4 and 5 flew :( Too bad a I don't go by 3 shot groups. 70s were shot in a round robin. 80s were shot 1 charge at a time because i wasn't sure how far off they'd be vs the 70s
