Savage 12FV 223

In previous years I have read threads about these smoking Christmas deals at Cabelas, and how these perform way higher than their price point.

I decided I would pounce on 1 this year. Sadly, they are only available in 6.5Creedmore or 308 this year.

What's up with that?

When Bass Pro bought Cabelas, those deals went away. Any that are available are NOS, and are great rifles to build on. Swap out the barrel for the desired caliber, and swap out the bolt head or entire bolt.

They were a smoking hot deal . Great rifles (Savage 12 FV) that got even cheaper at Christmas time. I think the lowest we paid was $319.00. Use to get them in .223 and .204. Pulled the barrels and put Shilen select match grade barrels in them. Sell the Savage barrel for what ever you could get. Yup those were the days. Darn Bass Pro screwed up a lot of good stuff.

Last one I picked up was a 270. Bought with the intention of building a 6.5-06. Sat in the back of the safe for longer than I like to admit. Got in a pinch to go on a hunt and all of my hunting rifles were not even close to ready to go. Grabbed the new 270 and a half dozen boxes of various loads. Had a partial box of 150 grain factory ammo, damn did it shoot. A few phone calls and a some 150’s, it will stay as is. That is when I found out the 130’s were NOT what had been shoved down my throat for many many years. The 150’s, this thing is pounding on 7 mag ideals.

I just got ahold of a 12FV - with a Leupold VX 6-18 scope on it. It got a rudimentary disassembly and cleaning of course - then I loaded a box of 55gr Varmegddon on W748. At the range off a Harris bipod, and a bag in back, I was 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. My handloads clocked in at 3050fps. I am happy!
When the weather warms up, I'll see how far I can reach with her.

My 12FV in 223 is very accurate with multiple bullet weights...55 gr, 60 gr, and 75 gr. Routinely under 1/2" with a little tinkering of load development. That being said, I have not seen a 12FV on the shelves of the local Cabelas in quite a while. Online I've only seen the 308 or 6.5 CM.

l don't like the NEW CABELAS either. When BPS took over the local one Grnd daughter's pay went from $18. to $11.hr with health lns dropped too. Unfortunately the local Cab/BPS is the only place around for powder/primers
