Savage 12 fv

I have been looking at the 12 fvc in 22-250 and Cabelas has the 12 fv on sale for $349 besides it not having a detachible mag is there any other differences? Also has anybody used one? Looking for a cheap truck gun for coyotes.

Not sure on the differences in the two models but the 12fv is a great rifle. I've bought a few for the actions and have buddies shooting them. The ones I've been around are accurate, hard to beat for the sale price. Oh an their is a rebate for a free fancy shooting shirt on them now too

I'm not familiar with the FVC, but have 2 FV12's from Cabelas in 204 & 223. Both are good shooters, but I would not consider either of them a "truck gun" due to the heavy barrel at 26" IIRC. If you plan to shoot from the hood or tailgate at varmints, would probably work, but the overall length of the gun fills up the width of my mid-sized SUT. Good for bench related shooting, would not want to carry it around the fields in any form or fashion.

$349 is a good price.........but have to agree the 26" varmint weight barrel won't be considered a truck gun.....Savage makes the Hog Hunter in 223 & threaded 20" barrel which would work alot better...

I just bought one (.22-250). It is surprisingly accurate with the 10-year-old factory ammo I used to sight it in with. Hung a 20X SIII on it and it's putting all rounds touching or 3/8" max. apart, and following scope clicks perfectly; no need for fouling shots either.
Feeding is okay, and the cheap plastic stock works okay for now. Never a Savage fan, I bought it for the 12-twist barrel to stabilize 53 and 60 gr. V-Maxes but am in no hurry to start loading, having so much fun running anything through it now and watching it shoot.
Any off-the-rack rifle is a crap shoot, but this seems like stone-cold bargain, and a low risk at the price.

I see it for $369.00 at Cabela's. If you would have bought it last month there was a $100.00 rebate till the end of June available. I'd still use it for a truck gun, blind mag and all.

I have one also. Good little shooters. You could always cut the barrel down and recrown it for for very little money for a dedicated truck gun.

It has a heavy varmint barrel. It's one thing to keep it in the truck, but to walk any distance, it might feel awkward (and heavy). The balance isn't what you expect: heavy barrel and lighter plastic stock. It will feel funny on your shoulder, and it wants to tip over. Or rather, it pulls on your shoulder differently than a more traditional balanced rifle.

I remember when I got my Savage 17hmr with the heavy varmint barrel. It was SO awkward. It wants to tip over slung over my shoulder.

But if you're going to shoot over the hood of a truck...sure, it could be a great rifle.

You could always take the barrel off and put a pre chambered barrel on it. That way you could have any length and contour you want. The take off barrel you can sell on this site very easily for $100 to recoup some of your funds. Another option.

Did not see that a Model 12 would qualify.

Carrying a varmint rifle with a 26" heavy contour barrel is a chore for sure BUT - if the fields I'm hunting lend themselves to long shots then I opted for one of my heavy varmint rifles. For me they just simply out perform my light weight stalkers. So I bite the bullet and carry the beast into the field. I'm 70 years old so I manage so you young guys shouldn't have a problem.:)

I picked up a Savage 12 FV in .223 from Cabelas for a project gun. I decided to mount a cheap Bushnell scope and bipod that I had laying around and see how it shot. After sighting in I shot this 5 shot .380 group from 100 yards with less than 10 rounds down the barrel. Not too bad for a cheap rifle shooting cheap store bought ammo.

I have a Browning Varmint Stalker with the same problem, the stock is too short for the 24" heavy barrel causing an unbalanced condition when attempting to carry with sling. I solved the problem by installing a barrel band three inches in front of the end of the forearm of the stock. Now the rifle balances quite nicely with the sling.

What weight bullet was the Fiocchi?

Well i ended up buying a savage model 11 in 308 22" barrel from a guy at work for a good price. Its a centerfeed short action with top bolt release and blind mag. Got it for half the price of the 12fv. My goal now is to find a barrel in 220 swift for it.
