savage 12 f/tr

just got one and would like help with powder choice, neck tension and over all length. started with h4895 best of .485 5 shot at 100yds but kind of inconsistent. could be my shooting. but would like all advice and info i can get. I am new to this forum, please help. thanks

smith, The Savage F-class that I had really liked the Sierra 142 gr. Match King in Lapua brass on top of 51.0 gr. of H-4831sc and Fed. match 210 primer seated .010 from the lands and app .002 neck tension. It was shooting groups at 100 yds. that measured in the .200 and .300 without any other load development. Bill

have you looked at the 6.5-284 info page?there is alot of good info there.after looking there i've been shooting 142smk and h4350 and cci br primers. about .002 neck tension.i've shot some groups in the .3s and have been happy with that. good luck. cliffe

A healthy charge of Varget seems to work well for the folks I shoot with. Mine seems to like both Varget & IMR 4895 under a Berger 155. Other folks have had good luck with the Lapua 154s, etc. There are some pretty good 'standard' loads over on the .308 Win page on this site:

www.6mmbr.com/308win.html

Most guns seem a bit individual in their appetite, but I'd be surprised if it didn't shoot well with a 155 of some flavor over Varget.

Good luck,

Monte

my savage is .308. i missed adding that info think I'm going to try varget,win748,imr4064. and blc-2 which works great in my 223 and my friends 308. but i have only started, and don't know how to test neck tension and coal. do i work the powder part out then play with tension and coal or at same time

my f/tr likes varget and 155 smk's. just take it one step at a time. if you try 2 or 3 different things at once you won't know which helped or hurt you and you will be fighting a 3 front battle. been there done that. mine will shoot sub 1 inch groups at 300 yards if i do my part and i am not that good of a shot so the gun and load are taking up a lot of slack for me. i did have to crank mine above what the books say as for load so you may have to work your way up. mine shows no pressure signs but is a bit warm, per all the books) and is running 2986 over a 20 shot average.

My son has the very same gun as you. We load it like this:

Norma case trimmed to 2.000
Fed 210 primer
46 grains of varget
168 Gr SMK.

COAL is loaded to SAMMI specications.
Shooting .36 MOA consistently. The rifle has room for improvement, so now that we now what load it likes, we will work with OAL in and out of the lands.

I recently bought 500 Speer TNT 125 grain bullets at a great price. I had to try them in my F/TR. 50.0 grains of H414 puts the little 125's into 5 shot groups in the .2's at 100 and groups in the .3's at 200. I know this isn't a 1000 yard bullet but for practice and ground hogs I think it is going to be just fine. I also load surplus 4895 with Sierra 155's. I'm going to try the Sierra 175's.
