Savage 110 FCP-HS

Does anybody own one? How does it shoot in general? With the really fast twist I would think it would prefer the 300 gr. bullets instead of the 250 gr. bullets but I've been wrong before. Like yours or would you opted for something higher end? Mainly I just want a .338 Lapua to shoot s*** out a ways with some wallop just for the fun of it. At $1,400, if it's a true 3/4 MOA capable rifle, I'd be more than happy. Just want to here your thoughts. :D

Mine shoots everything from 215 grains to 300 well, given proper load development. 1/2 MOA being well. Most of my loads are 250 grains these days. Not because they shoot better than the 300's but more so because I'm not man enough to toss volkswagons down range all day long :)

The difference between the 250's and the 300's, even considering the decent muzzle break, is significant in terms of recoil. For 1500+ yards, 300 would be my choice. Anything less, 250's. Hunting, 215's.

Personally, I would buy a 300 win mag and get a custom .338 Edge barrel. I am pushing 300 grain SMK's out of my Edge at 2800 fps and they are damn accurate!! In a 10-13 mph wind, I shot a 4.35" group on a swinging steel target at 400 yards. (The target swings a good two feet when you shoot it and it's fun to hit it while it's swinging!!) The best I've shot out of it was a 4.52" group at 665 yards. Have not shot it beyond that yet. It was a 300 win savage action that I picked up for $225 and then a custom 32" X-Caliber match barrel. Love it! Sold my .338 Lapua once I got it built. It was a 110FCP-HS. The edge is easier to shoot at distances...IMHO. Downside of the Edge...NO factory ammo.

If it helps, both the FCP-K that I have in .308 and the FCP-HS .338 Lapua that I had would perform better than I can shoot...and I was a 7 time USMC rifle expert...they are sub-MOA guns. The .308 prints under .5 MOA all day. Never shot the HS enough, but you can hit most of what you are aiming at if you do your part. For the money, hands down best guns out there.

do a search on stuck cases in the Savage 338 LM,,,some shoot and extract fine but many many people have had serious trouble with stuck cases,,most reputable gunsmiths say the Savage bolt is not large enough in dia to handle the thrust created by the 338 LM case,,not one barrel company that sells prefit/chambered Savage barrels will sell you a barrel in 338 LM,,
I bought mine used and Savage would not warranty it since it was bought 2nd hand so instead of pushing it off on someone else I stripped it down and sold everything I could and threw the barrel and action in the river,,

it would stick cases with Lapua Brass loaded with 82 grs H1000 and 300 OTMs at 2450 fps,,at 86 grs and 2600 fps it would lock the bolt,,

I had a smith check my head space and it was good, got extractor from Savage ,turned necks for more clearance and bought 500$ of Lapua brass,,sad part was it would shoot lights out 250 AND 300 gr bullets but you had to keep a cleaning rod to extract cases,,Lapua cases,,

I would get the 300 Win Mag and shoot the 215 or 230 Hybirds as they will knock the crap out of stuff also and more than likely will function properly,,the 338 LM is a large round IMO needing a larger action than a Savage or Rem 700,,

good luck with your decision,,

I have never heard anything on cases sticking but reading through that thread on LRH is interesting. I don't have much need for a .300 Winchester Mag as I have a .300 SAUM. I might just to have to build another rifle, oh boy... ;D :o
