Savage 110 conversion: 30-06 AI or 300 Win Mag?

I have a Savage 110 that I want to get ready for deer/elk hunting this year. It's chambered in 30-06. I'm thinking about converting it to ackley improved. Are the gains worthy of the mod?

I really want to convert it to 300 win mag but I thought if I can get similar performance out of an AI, it would seem like a better bargain. To convert my Savage to 300 win mag, I would need a new bolt face, a new magazine, barrel and dies. I suppose it doesn't cost too much more to do the full convert to 300 since a new mag well and bolt face is pretty affordable. I was thinking less recoil and more brass availability.

Plus, I already have 2 M14 clones that both shoot 1" at 100 yds consistently so I wanted something that can outperform the 308 to take me out to the next level. My Savage will be a work in progress and I see it changing a few times. I eventually would like a glass bedded composite stock and a bipod. Nothing too tactical, just something that can double as a good long range rifle and at the same time doesn't look out of place for hunting in the rainforest of Oregon.

Right now it's just a stock 30-06 in wood that could be walnut or birch, I really don't know. It was my step-dad's from the mid-80's. I loaned it to a friend and he moved to Montana and I never heard from him for years. Then I tracked him down and he sent me the rifle back. He refinished the stock and it looks really nice. For now it has a standard barrel but I eventually want a bull barrel or a medium weight barrel. It will be topped with an Evolution Gun Works one piece picatinny scope base rail and a Zeiss 3x-9x X 50mm with a rapid-Z 600 reticle which I already have. IIRC, the reticle was ideal for the 300 win mag.

Opinions are appreciated.

I am a bit partial I have a 300 win mag Sav 110. I have had the action trued and a Benchmark barrel on it. I have a Stockade "Mule Deer" stock on it, bedded. The mag was lengthened so I could seat Amax's and 210 Bergers way out. I love it. I carry it when I go to MT and WY muley and elk hunting. Some might say you don't need that much rifle but it instills confidence in me. It shoots both Amax and Berger bullets in the .3's on good days and .5's on regular days. I would go with the 300 win and buy some RWS brass, Lee collet die and a Redding body die and don't look back.

Please school me on barrel options (makers). I was looking at the Bell & Carlson stock for now.

Since we are on the subject, what are th popular mods for a Savage 110 receiver from the 80's?

I go through phases in my life. from 2000 through 2006 I was in a pistol phase where I really practiced and purchased some good pistols. From 2006 through now, I was in an M14/service rifle phase and really got into the M14. Now I am feeling the urge to learn more about accurate bolt action rifles.

That being said, what is "truing" the receiver and why is it done?

Truing an action gets everything in a straight line with the bore and getts the lugs to have proper contact with the receiver. I know there are guys her ethat can expound on this more than I can. As far as stocks are concerned Kevin at Stockade is one of the resident experts on Savage rifles.

There are a few barrel makers out there that make a twist on Savage barrel. I heard good things about Benchmark so I went that way. They are a small shop that does good work and their wait time isn't what some of the big guys are.

Just about every barrel maker has drop ins for the Savage line.
Brux/krieger/mcgowan/douglas/benchmark/critierian/ershaw & more.
I am having a Mcgowan SS match in 6x45 made for one of my goat rigs myself.
The Savage site has a LOT of info and sponsers that are bbl makers who you can call & talk to pretty easily.

Another outfit that has a good line is Sharp Shooters Supply. The owner has specialized in Savage bolt guns and seems to know his stuff. I would not mess around with an AI conversion. The 30 06 is so optimized as is, there is very little gain.
