I have a Savage 110 that I want to get ready for deer/elk hunting this year. It's chambered in 30-06. I'm thinking about converting it to ackley improved. Are the gains worthy of the mod?
I really want to convert it to 300 win mag but I thought if I can get similar performance out of an AI, it would seem like a better bargain. To convert my Savage to 300 win mag, I would need a new bolt face, a new magazine, barrel and dies. I suppose it doesn't cost too much more to do the full convert to 300 since a new mag well and bolt face is pretty affordable. I was thinking less recoil and more brass availability.
Plus, I already have 2 M14 clones that both shoot 1" at 100 yds consistently so I wanted something that can outperform the 308 to take me out to the next level. My Savage will be a work in progress and I see it changing a few times. I eventually would like a glass bedded composite stock and a bipod. Nothing too tactical, just something that can double as a good long range rifle and at the same time doesn't look out of place for hunting in the rainforest of Oregon.
Right now it's just a stock 30-06 in wood that could be walnut or birch, I really don't know. It was my step-dad's from the mid-80's. I loaned it to a friend and he moved to Montana and I never heard from him for years. Then I tracked him down and he sent me the rifle back. He refinished the stock and it looks really nice. For now it has a standard barrel but I eventually want a bull barrel or a medium weight barrel. It will be topped with an Evolution Gun Works one piece picatinny scope base rail and a Zeiss 3x-9x X 50mm with a rapid-Z 600 reticle which I already have. IIRC, the reticle was ideal for the 300 win mag.
Opinions are appreciated.
