Savage 10 short action question

I had a guy ask me if the Savage 10 short action is stiff enough being it has the magazine cut out for bench and target work.He won a 243 on a gun ticket and its one of the Savage package deals with the scope included. He wants to take it apart and make a 6 BR.I told him I would ask on here as I have no Savage experience except I know many have built some good rifles on their actions.

It won't be as stiff as a single-shot custom action, but it will be stiff enough to support a long barrel and shoot very well. My Savage 10FP with 27" tube will shoot in the twos at 100 yards, occasional high ones with Flat Based bullets), and has shot under 2" at 600 yards.

You can epoxy in a plate to block the receiver well if you prefer, but this isn't really necessary. BTW, I recommend a Weaver-style rail rather than the Leupold dovetail ring base shown in the picture. At the time the rifle was built, Medium high Signature Zee rings were not yet available, so I used this set-up to get a low-profile installation for prone work.

I did see that you used the 10 FP in that rifle but I know Savage changes things around time and again.I see the FP is the varmint version but has the magazine cut.Yours shoots like a house of fire with that action.I read your article and was amazed at the potential of the Savage.I will tell my friend to go for it instead of using his 112BVSS that he would hate to take apart and is a 223 and will need another boltface to boot. Now he will need a stock.

Anybody,
I have a Savage in 243 win and I would like to build a 500yd+ varmint rifle out of it. I would like to start with a new barrel but I don't know where I can get a drop-in aftermarket Savage barrel in Canada. Does anybody know of Canadian barrel manufacturers or barrel distributors in Canada, preferably in Ontario). Hopefully someone could help me out!

Steveyrock,

I started with a Savage 12BVSS in .243 and replaced the barrel with a Shilen 8 twist in 6BR and never looked back. The barrel channel needed to be opened for the fat barrel I used. Sometime later I replaced the accutrigger with a Rifle Basix model 2 and set the pull weight to about 1/2 ounce. Making any of the 6mmBR varients should be a snap. I even was able to put the barreled action into a Choate stock and shot it for a while that way. You won't be dissapointed starting with a Savage action and building on it. Get a good barrel and free float it. I put a single feed ramp from Sinclair in mine. The magazine cutout does not seem to be a problem for me given the relatively low pressure of a 6BR.
