sanding/polishing a mcmillan stock

the snow is flying here and rifle season ended. Looking to take my mcmillan stock and sand/polish out the typical imperfections in the stock from the factory. Anyone have a process or tips for me on how to do this?
Thanks

I suggest you start with automotive paste (or liquid) polish. See if that gets you the finish you prefer. If not, then try rubbing compound, followed by the polish.

I got the polish tip from Dick Davis of McMillan several years ago. :)

By the way, tape off the recoil pad, if there's one affixed to the stock. The polish can discolor it, as it can plastic trim on your car.

When refinishing a stock I always start with a 100 grain sand paper, and work up from there. I work all the way up to the highest grade steel wool . once I get to the steel wool I wipe the stock with a wet rag. That brings out the imperfections in the wood. Than I sand those perfections out, I continue that till its glass smooth. Whatever you do don't use sponge brushes, they leave bubbles in the finish. Sand between every coat of your finish with the highest grade steel wool or sand paper you can find.

I use a 3in. buffer,First with #05936 Extra-cut compound with a wool pad. Then to finish I use #05941 Finishing glaze with a foam pad. Both are made by 3M. You may need some 400 sand paper with water and a small amount of dish soap to help the stock stay wet while you sand out the worse spots before you start buffing.

Ouch...wouldn't be touching 100 grit to a mcmillan gel coat.

Start 320-400 then 600+ and wetsand with each...then if you want more put the polishing compounds to it.
