Sako TRG-22 Re-barrel Question

Hi folks,

I have been asked to rebarrel a Sako TRG-22 with a Bartlein Heavy Palma barrel. The factory barrel has a 1.160" shank versus the 1.250" shank on a palma barrel. Will a palma barrel fit into the Sako factory stock or should I turn down the shank to 1.160"? Unfortunately I do not have the stock to examine.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,
I would think the stock could be relieved to accommodate a larger diameter barrel. However the bigger issue is; the front of the action has a chamfer that meets the 1.160 dia. bbl. Using a 1.250 barrel will overhang the action face. I have the same issue with a Tikka Master Sporter in 6.5x55. I was thinking of facing the chamfer off the action face to use the 1.250 bbl. and clearing the stock to accommodate the bbl. Or turning the bbl. to 1.160 to mate with the action face. I am not sure which is best.

I cut the chamfer off of my M995 and used a 1.250 shank. It's going in a Manners stock so the barrel channel is not an issue.

It will fit. Did the same thing on one of my TRG's, there is plenty of room in the factory TRG stock/forearm assembly. I thought I'd have issues but the same barrel, with a 5" shank and .930 at muzzle fits fine.

The Palma barrel will look lost in the TRG stock....

I fit a 32" long heavy palma .338 edge barrel to a TRG and chose to turn the shank down to match the action face. Otherwise the rest of the barrel fit the stock fine. By the time the break was added to the barrel, it looked like a piece of artillery, though.
