Sako L579 vs Remington 700

Hello all,

I just picked up a Lothar Walther barrel at a great price and I want to rebarrel one of my rifles. The barrel is a 243 cal 1-10 twist.

I have a Remington 700 action just sitting around. I also have an old Sako L579 that I just ordered a stock for. There is nothing wrong with the gun, but I want something new.

All of my semi custon 700s are very accurate.

I have never dumped money into a Sako.

Someone make my decision a little easier. Sako or Rem?

I am thinking 6br also.

Give me some opinions please

Hello,
I'm no expert, but I used to have a Sako .308 and it seemed like a perfectly acceptable rifle. Obviously, more gunsmiths and machinists like the Remington because it can be tweeked easier. Also, the number of accessories are greater than with the Sako. I believe you do what you want....and enjoy the outcome!

I collect old Sakos, and I have several custom Remingtons. I can tell you that rebarreling the Sako will severaly depreciate its value. I would not do that. As farim said, the Remington is the most desired for a custom as all gunsmiths find them easy to work on. Just get it trued up in the process. I have three 6BR's and they are great for competition as well as long range varmints.

One suggestion if you go with the Remington 700 have them install a Sako extractor way better than the one remington installs, also have the action trued. As said you will cut the value of the Sako in half if you re-barrel it. If it were me I would do the Remington. Lou

Depends on the condition of the Sako. I've got one to re-barrel, in the shop now. She's a 'hand-me-down' thats been used hard. The CM barrel is one big pit. The receiver, bolt and related componets spent two cycles in the ultra-sonic cleaning tank. As for the Remington,, I sure don't see many extractors fail, and I see a couple of hundred or so every year, in my shop. The only ones that do, I have to question if they were installed correctly to begin with. The only extractor modification on a 700 I make is to the M16 style that has a 'hinge pin' to retain it. Thousands have had the Sako type installed, some have been 'blown' out of place and become a projectile that's traveling in the wrong direction. One word, liability. If it's not broke, don't fix it! If I was building a sporter, I'd choose that slim, trim Sako. Other wise, I'd probably use the Remington.

Well i had a similar dilema as you and I built a 6x47Lwith a 1/10 on the L579 I also had the trigger tuned.

It launches 75 grn V-Max at 3750 fps and 5 will land in .72" at 300m.

The barrel is a Sako varmint profile in a Standard Sako Varmint stock.

Do I love it only with a passion
