sako 22-250 rebarrel Q.

Infrequent Shooter

Gold $$ Contributor
Sako, All, 22-250 varmint question. what are some of the calibers this rifle could be rebarreled to without more than changing the barrel? it is a magazine rifle

Well since your gonna use the same barrel you will be "rechambering" not "rebarreling".

The Sako has metric threads so if your smith can or ius willing to cut metric threads then you can cut the barrel back some and realy open you options up to things like the 22BR and 22-250 Ackley, but if you wanting to just make a new chamber then your gonna have to go bigger than the 22-250, to things like the 22-243, 22-6mm rem and so on.

JDJ,

I misread mw999's post as well. I thought he was asking what he can chamber in the original barrel. After re-reading the post, mw wants to know what chambering, with a new barrel) will still function through the factory magazine.

You can rebarrel it into just about anything that has a .473 head size and will fit in the chamber. I have an L579 in the drawer that's going to become a 22 BR most likely, another L579 at the gunsmith that I think I'll make a 6x47 Lapua, and another L579 on a shelf somewhere that might become another 6 BR.

Your 22-250 most likely has a spacer in the magazine, the 579s did, so the AII probably does also) that can easily be removed if you want to use a longer cartridge like something in the 243 Win range or even another 22-250 with heavier bullets. If you're going shorter, just leave it in.
