S&W M-19-4

I just couldn’t seem to shoot my 6 “ 44 mag Virginian Dragoon revolver accurately enough and with the weight of over 2 pounds I finally decided to not carry it hunting anymore in favor of a good rifle.
I found myself trading the “hog leg” for a S&W 19-4 off the pawn shop shelf one day and to my surprise that 357 with only a small sight adjustment really shoots well !
So when and IF I choose to take a revolver when we travel I’m more confident.

I wonder how many other guys have come to a similar conclusion ?

Howdy !

I've been shooting/carrying a
357Mag ( " N " frame ) for 50yr.

Works for me!

With regards
357Mag

The Mod 19 and 357 Mag. are the answer for many on what to carry and shoot. Quality revolver, great caliber 38 Special AND 357 M, great resale, it fills all the holes. I agree with Elmer Keith, that many shooters can't handle the recoil of a 44 Mag. and 357 Mag may be the max for many. I have had several Mod 19s over 60 years, now I have a 27-2 and Mod 686. A Mod 19 would shoot the light 357s and 38 Spec. I now shoot just fine. You have a real treasure, shoot more and enjoy it.

I've had a Model 19, 4" barrel, for over 40 years. I shoot 38+P reloads in mine (231 and 125 XTP's). Excellent accuracy with mild recoil.

I never hunted with my Model 19 because I didn't want to put a lot of heavy 357 magnum reloads through it since it has a relatively light frame, "K". I carried mine when hiking in the mountains and for general range practice.

For hunting, I used the S&W Model 27 and 586, "N" and "L" frames respectively with full power reloads. However, I have not hunted with a pistol since the mid 80's but still enjoy shooting them.

I thought at one time I would try hunting with my Ruger Blackhawk 41 magnum, it seem to suffer the same fate as the Dragoon, only this was traded for a NIB kimber 1911 that my Daughter talked me out of a few years later. lol

I have had several 19’s through the years. I now have a 6” and and a 2.5”- both shoot amazing. For heavier loads I use a 4” 686.

kickin this back to life. I am with you. I wound up finding a very rare 66-4 ( mod 19 SS) which has the 3in bbl. I think it is my all time fav revolver for fit, size to power ratio and fail proof. I am still learning how to shoot it well. half way thru a 500ct box of hard cast 38's. I just put up my 686-4 6in on the classifieds. Beauty too but I wanted it for pinging steel at 100-200 with 357 off rest and it aggravates old wrist injury. Shooting offhand no issues. That 66 will take more 357's than i can handle and would only use them for the real thing anyhow.
