S.M.Ks and overall length.

If a very broad generalisation can be made, do Sierra Match Kings like to be in the lands, just up against the lands or to have a jump to the rifleing. In my case .257 100g S.M.Ks in 25-06. Any thoughts appreciated.

longlowdog, sierra mk's seem to prefer to jump .015-.020" I'm sure some barrels will be different but this seems to be the general rule. regards______treeman

Ive never had a rifle shoot consistantly tight groups off the lands. All my rifles shoot .010"-.020" on the lands. Generally leaves marks length to width with .002" push back.
And i shoot alot of SMK projectiles. This is just what ive experienced though. I dont think there is a rule to follow, you need to see what your rifle prefers.

I understand that each barrel may be diferent. Range time for load development is limited by work and shooting too many rounds at home on the farm tends to upset my generally understanding neighbours.
If there is some sort of accepted trend for each bullet then if I use this as a start point then I can keep the noise down and realise as much accuracy as possible from my rifle given the limited opportunities to work on it.
Another question if I may, what sort of barrel life are we talking for 25-06? Mine certainly seems to like the charges at the higher end of the powder scale i.e 55.7g of H4831sc.

I agree with treeman, as a general rule best accuracy with stabdard match bullets is achieved somewhere between .020 off the rifling to .010 into the rifeling. VLD's are a whole different animal. My 243 Ackley shoots best at .007 off the lands. If you have your powder choice narrowed down, start at .020 off and work towards the lands in .005 increments. The targets should tell you very quickley where your particular barrel wants the bullets to sit.
