s/a r700 bolt travel

r700 s/a. If I take the firing pin out (bare bolt) and close the action, how much play should it have forward/rearward?

Easy button is use a test indicator on the back of the bolt and measure travel Probably could do it with a caliper and some imagination Could be done with a feeler gauge as well What are your concerns

Actually Mike, That is bolt nose clearance. Not what he is asking about. What stops the bolt from traveling any farther forward is actually the bolt handle.
Bolt nose clearance is usually much less than the primary extraction gap from the bolt handle. I'd be willing to bet that any factory rem action has more than .010" gap in front of the bolt handle. Properly fitted, .005-.007" bolt nose clearance is common.

Exactly

So the play I am seeing/feeling is between the boltface meeting the barrel (forward) and the lugs meeting each other (rear). So I should not be worried about .010"? And why cant I move the bolt when its all put together and cocked? I am assuming its stopping on something on the top of the trigger?

No sir, you should not be worried about .010". That is a very normal clearance value, especially for a field use rifle. Some folks run a bit less for a competition gun, but that is a matter of preference.

I agree that I would not be concerned wit .010” clearance. If you want to measure it another method is take a small pc of thin solder and set it on the bolt nose with a dab of grease close the bolt and then remove the pic of solder and mic it

Not on a barreled action, sir
Ok, I guess I never took the time to realize that the counterbore depth is what sets that back and forth play on a "Barreled Action" . I have a drawer with 10 or 12 actions in it and I picked one up that had a stripped bolt in it and started jiggling it back and forth, I thought to myself, If you were to take the bolt handle off, The bolt will slide through the front of the action and out.

I stand corrected, I don't mind admitting when I am wrong. I will say though that 0.010 bolt nose clearance is pretty standard for a Smith to set the bolt nose clearance, And I doubt there are too many Remington's out there with much less than that from the factory, I could be wrong though, I am not a Remington guy, I find them boring. :D

I measured the bolt handle gap, using feeler gages, on 50 stripped RR actions a few years ago. I didn't save the data, but the average was 0.020, with a small gap of 0.010 and a large gap of 0.045, as I recall. The headspace of these actions were all 0.698. The bolt nose may shorten the gap, may not, depending on how the barrel is machined. The dimension from the front of the action to the bolt slot varies causing the gap differences. That is why moving the bolt handle may improve primary extraction. If you have 0.010 you have no problem.

If it is just the receiver and bolt only then you get a mile. If you have a barrel installed and the clearances are set right you will have .005-.010 axial movement (recoil lug to cbore / end of tenon to bolt lug). I shoot for .005 on the Remingtons I rebarrel.
