Rws primer info

I came across some RWS primers and was wondering if anyone has seen or used theses before. I sent RWS a message and they sent me a response saying that this wasn't their product. Not sure why they would say that since it has their name right on the box. Just wondering what these would be closest to to what we have here in the states.

Those are at least 50 years old for large rifle, the only thing going for RWS is percussion caps now.

RWS ammo is currently manufactured by RUAG Ammotec GMbH in Germany. You may have confused it with Umarex RWS here in the states that manufactures air guns and accessories.

You mean in terms of primers?
I have a bunch of RWS headstamp brass for 45 ACP and find it to be very good quality.

In today’s corporate conglomerate world, the only thing that might remain the same today from when the primers were made the is the company name. The person that replied to your inquiry may have no knowledge of the company’s overall history.

OK, the problem may be that the primers you have were manufactured when RWS was owned by Dynamit Nobel. DN's operations were bought by RUAG in Switzerland and DN ceased to exist. I suppose they are told by their attorneys that any product manufactured under DN's tenure is to be disavowed for purposes of product liability.

The RWS primers were manufactured and sold in the UK as RWS. It says on my carton Dynamit Nobel. Made in Germany.
Bought a tray of 250 only yesterday and it now reads on the carton RUAG Ammotec, Furth, Germany.
The last 500 I bought worked very consistently in my .243 with Nosler 80gr B/Tips and Vit N140 or RL16
powder. I hope these do as well!

As the Pirate said, those are really old. I purchased RWS primers through the 70s-90s and they came in red boxes packaged 250 to the box. They had a reputation for consistent ignition back in the day when ammo was judged by its performance on the paper. There was only one importer in the US and my fuzzy brain has lost his store name

Well these might be some antique primers out of Hitler's reloading room. I'll have to load them up in something and see how they shoot.

They are old. And the ARE made by RWS (Dynamit Nobel in Germany) I used some in match rifle loads in the early 1970s. They worked well. I’m not sure how well they’ll do today as there’s no storage history. But there’s no point in being timid as the only real bad thing is hang fires or misfires. So try them and see.

These were thought of the best available at the time (Bob Jensen/Mid Thompkins). This thread reminded me that I still had about 1000 of these. I am guessing these were manufactured in the 80's.

All I can say is I use RWS 50bmg primers and they work well.

How do you know that they are a magnum primer. I just see on the package where it says large rifle.

I have around a 1000 RWS in the shed. I hope that they work, as currently, they are the only LR out there...other than some Federal magnum match and maybe some old Remingtons

( The RWS work fine. Been using them in 308 for years)

The number 5341 on the box denotes Large Rifle Primers.
Magnum primers are number 5333
Small rifle primers are number 4033

RWS primers work quite well - certainly one of the better ones out there, but also very expensive as far as primers are concerned (at least here in Australia).

I found this old pamphlet digging around on the web yesterday. It lists the 2845 number shown on my carton of primers. They don't show any magnum type primers but maybe back then they just used they same primer for both.

My recollection was that the testing that Mid Tomkins/Bob Jensen did, found that the mildest primer that would reliably ignite the charge would give the best ES's which was vital for flat elevations at 1000 yards. They found that the RWS met that criteria. I used a few thousand of the 5341 code twenty or so years ago but to me they didn't seem any better than the Federals I had been using and being slightly smaller diameter I was having to bin brass as the primer pockets opened up
