Rutland lathe ???

Hello

I found a lathe for sale online. It's a Rutland 13x40. With several other tools and accessories.

Research has found that the Rutland brand has changed to MSC.

Does anyone know anything about this brand of lathe?

Spindle bore is 1 9/16"

I'm wanting it for learning to work on a lathe and the price is right $1650. Says its in good condition and is not to far to go pick it up.

I'm sure that it is imported china or Taiwan. I have an Enco import and you do have to work around quality issues with the cheap imports.

For your first lathe, if it is in good - very good condition, it should serve you well. Be cautious of wear on the ways that can easily go unnoticed by inexperience.

These are not high quality machines, parts will wear much faster - esp. if the machine was not kept clean. Check the backlash of all feeds, be sure you cannot wiggle the compound or cross-slide forward or backward.

Prices vary dramatically by region but if you have been in the market for any time, you probably have some idea of value.

Another word of caution on practical machinist, many unfriendly folks over there, but a wealth of knowledge and experience......after sorting opinion from fact.
