Running shot on a coyote that could have went bad.

At daybreak, this big female came in at 125 yards across the river, bait pile as I was preparing to shoot my rifle, suppressor hit the window frame ever so slightly, and she was gone like a violated ape.I took the running shot in the timber; she let out a howl and disappeared into the brush. I hopped on the ATV and went after her,not one drop of blood in 4 inches of snow, but her tracks showed she was scrambling and falling. I found her at about 150 yards dead as a mackerel. Look at the shot entrance, one would assume gut gutshot, which means you never recover a coyote. However, it was a kidney renal artery hit, she bled out and was retrieved batting 1000 so far this year.An autopsy later that day showed the spleen was obliterated which caused massive hemorrhagic internal bleeding,as well as the kidney and renal arteries, all closely intertwined.

I had a similar situation last week, though I wasn't as lucky - and, as you mention - it doesn't always go well with such hits. I shot mine with my .243 Win and a fast-moving 62 V-Max. Kawaaap! Hike up the hill 360 yards to find this. Lots of bits, pieces and blood - but no coyote. took me 20 minutes to get up to where he was and he had lots of time to hobble off into deep cover.

The way we used to hunt coyotes they were all running shots. Unless you caught one standing early in the morning. Most of them were jumped out of weed patches or small timbers. They were packin the mail when they came out of the brush. Doug

My rig is too heavy between the scope and suppressors at least three pounds,I only call and bait from stationary platforms, knowing a coyotes anatomy saved me on this one.

I got one on the run from ATV, surprised her by the first 2 shots then 'legs up' on the running one. 300BO @150 yds with IR scope. Never found entry or exit holes, 110 vmax.
