rules for F T/R

Can a glass bedded Savage .308 F T/R still be used in competition and be considered a factory rifle despite the fact that it did not come glass bedded from the factory?

Yes it can, there's nothing in the NRA Rules that say any F/TR Rifle has to be FACTORY.....in either caliber!

Read for yourself, not just the F-Class part, the whole thing:

http://www.nrahq.org/compete/RuleBooks/HPR/hpr-index.pdf

The Ontario Rifle Assoc. has a Factory division in F Class. The rifle can be re-bedded and re-crowned but not re-chambered or re-barreled. Must be factory trigger.

Not the U.S. NRA but I would guess the philosophy would be the same.

Many thanks to Taildrag15x and 1000yardstare.
I'm only shooting in the US so it looks like I can bed, accurize, restock, and even rebarrel as long as I meet the 8.25 kg. weight and use a front bipod. Is this correct?

Another question--what group size should a rifle be able to shoot at 100 to be competitive in FTr at 600 with a 308?

All depends...who's shooting that day! : ;D.... most of the time just under 1 moa is ok... but I like groups @ 1/2 moa

Shooting in the Arizona State Palma Championship last week, I shot my Savage 12F .308 to a 150-10X at 900. That was the high score for both F-Open and F-TR at 900. So, a Savage can be competitive. I think Monte feels the same way. ;)

Only in the US...

...and most of the rest of the shooting world. Canada is one of the exceptions on this one.

There is a very political debate going on in Canadian F/TR over the use of the front rest.

It is a holdover from the Canadian-only F(F), literally Farquharson(Farquharson), in honour of the Canadian founder of F Class. Only .223 or .308 is permitted in F(F) but a front rest may be used.

At the 2010 Canadian Championships F/TR and F(F) were combined into one category, F/TR, for prize purposes. Thus bipod and front rest were shooting side by each. There were two Canadians shooting under the old F(F) rules with a front rest. This upset some members of Team U.S. who had been told that F/TR at the 2010 Canadians would be shot under ICFRA rules, bipod only.

I was involved in a 3-way conversation with a member of Team U.S. and one of the F(F) Canadians. The U.S. shooter was registering his displeasure over the front rest and the F(F) Canadian was saying he would be shooting with a front rest until he is lowered into the ground.

The kicker in all of this is that the two F(F) Canadians are long time past Exec members in the DCRA and are held in very high regard for their service over the years. It will be interesting to see if these two shoot for "honours only" at the 2011 Canadians or if they are allowed to fully participate in F/TR with their front rests.

A very touchy subject.

We still have one guy (he's from the US, but shoots in Ont. mostly) that shows up once in a blue moon with his .223 Rem. and a Front Rest at Peru, we just lump him in Open Class, problem beign he built his rifle at 18 lbs. so he's real heavy with a bi pod on.
