Ruger VT's in PPC caibers- what were they like??

Hi
What were the ruger Vt's in PPC caliubers like from a few years ago.

I am tossing up between a 20 practical or a 20 PPC once my barrel arrives.
Needs to be a repeater so I was thingking of one of the ruger in 20 PPC.

or should I just stick to the 20-222 or 20 practical on a Sako 461 action I already own.

Walk around varmiting

What do you guys think??

barrel is a Lothar Walther 1:10 twist sporter weight- 26 inch

Ps I have dies for either option

Let me start out by saying that you can find a whole lot better actions to build on than the Ruger. I had one in 22ppc I bought new in about 95'. Never approached expectations, not even close. So I chucked the barrel and had it turned into a shortmag before Winny and Remmy had such things. Fact is that the smith advised against the Ruger but I already had it.......
So I ended up with what was supposed to be a single shot long range big game rifle that was fair at best. There are a whole slew of gunsmith's out there who wont touch a Ruger because they cant true it up like they can the others. Find a Remmy or use the Sako you refered to.

We spoke about the Ruger in ppc chambering a little while back.

I had purchased Ruger MarkII target rifle "all stainless" in 22ppc as soon as they came out. With handloads right out of the box it seemed like it wanted to shoot so I bedded the action had it recrowned and lightend the trigger. The gun shot solid .500 groups and some smaller and I shot alot of groundhogs with it until I sold it to a farmer who simply worshiped the gun after using it for several weeks.

as tightneck stated, there are better actions to work with than the Ruger but mine shot pretty good and served as a great beater varmint rifle in 22 ppc out to 350 yds.Guns like these can be hit or miss and the triggers stink even after some work.

I had a 77VT in 6mmPPC and a #1V in .22PPC. The 77 was my first PPC and it was a pretty good benched-and-bagged gun for me at the time. Under 0.500" at 100y was easy, which is not bad for a factory gun without any modifications. Considering what it was, the little rifle shot well with several bullets but nothing outstanding. With 55gr Noslers, it compared very well ballistically with sub-.22-250 chambered rifles. The #1 looked and felt nice, but was otherwise lacking the desired features of a rifle in a varmint caliber. I think the PPCs have a place as factory guns, but they really should not be compared with a well made rifle with a custom barrel and quality action. For a walking varmint rifle, I would have a rifle built around a Remington Model Seven or short-action 700 unless you just want something 'neat'.

Never had 1 in a ruger but this may help.A fella in the UK uses a 6ppc to take out crows and foxes in the sheep fields out past 300yds with 58grV-MAX.

I also have a Ruger 77mkII in 6mm PPC. All I have to say about mine is that I must have got a really fantastic rifle from the factory because this thing shoots. I use Sako PPC USA brass and Norma brass. I feed it berger 69gr LD's and 71gr Boattails. I use h335 and h332 for this rifle. I also have used sierra 60gr HPFB,70gr MK and 85gr HPBT with great results. This rifle has not been glass bedded. The only thing that was done to it was by me when I took a 3/4 copper pipe and some 80grit sand paper and totally opened up the barrel channel so it is totally free floated. It has a leupold VXIII 6.5-20x scope. This rifle with the 69gr bergers will shoot 5/8 inch groups at 200 yards on a very good day. Believe this or not but it put down a ground hog at close to 550 yards using the 69gr bergers.
