Ruger sr556 barrel ?

Well I was dissembling a Ruger sr556 piston op rifle and encountered a proprietary barrel but. I did do a search and found very limited information.

I contacted Ruger today and they told me I should not be disasembling the rifle to replace the barrel and they would not give me any further information on where to obtain a proper wrench for removal.

Does anyone have any experience or information on getting these off? I was thinking of making a small spanner wrench.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks
Nick

I have never seen one quit like that. I did a RA awile back and it had a smooth barrel nut that I had a hard time getting off. I got mad and used a odd wrench I got at tractor supply. That or a pipe wrench. But both of these will bugger the nut up so if you are not going to replace it I would not advise you to use them. Good luck.

Have you tried a shotgun forearm wrench from brownells ?
And if that won't work, make a wrench similar to a shotgun forearm wrench that'll fit that nut.......... Most who visit these boards don't seem to realize it, but making those specialized tools (and even the common tools like action wrenches and barrel vises) is all part of gunsmithing. The most excepted name for a nut like that is "castle nut".

The forend wrench that I have (12ga ) does not fit. I thought of that as soon as I saw it but it was a no go.

I was thinking i was going to have to make something for it.

I know this isn't a very popular rifle but I just thought someone may have an aftermarket wrench for this thing by now.

Thanks for the help guys.

Thanks
Nick

You also might try a 4 wheel drive front axle bearing wrench , all diff sizes of castle nuts on all dif makes . A good measurement and a trip to Napa .

That sir is a great idea. I will deffinetly give that a try. Even if I can get something close to save some time on making one.

Thank you
Nick

Hello Sir,

What about a spanner wrench, would that come close?

I did try a few spanners that I had and I was just not comfortable with the small purchase in one notch.

The nut is torqued very tight. And I have heard of some having a threadlock compound on it.

Nick, If it has threadlock compound on it, heat with a propane torch and then see if the spanner wrench will work. Chances are if locktite used it is not torched overly tight hopefully.

Stuff like that from the factory is usually "tighter than Dicks' hat band". Wasn't ment or intended to be dismantled outside of the factory.

Yup that's what Ruger told me the other day.
They told me they don't even have a rebarrel option for people. They have never had one come in with a bad barrel. Just kinda laughed and hung up.

And, how ya' gonna' hold the receiver so you don't break it while wrenching on the barrel nut? Problems, problems,,,,,,,,,Always problems...

This is why I'm not a fan of proprietary systems; you are at the mercy of the manufacturers or you pay an arm and a leg to reproduce what they won't sell you. I would clamp that thing in a barrel vise, warm it with a torch, and using a solid punch and hammer whack the nut loose. If you can't see the nut when the handguard is installed a little marring is no big deal.

I was kinda thinking of going with the barrel vise on this one. Just seems like it's going to be a bear to get off. I don't want any issues with the reciever.
