Ruger Precision Rimfire Accuracy Project

Well, My recently purchased Ruger Precision Rimfire was shooting pretty good I thought, until I started shooting 10 shot groups vs 5 shot groups. So after I seen how it group 10 shots of different ammo. I decided to order a 18” Match barrel from Shaw custom barrels. Hopefully within the next week or so I’ll have some group pictures to share with all.

The picture below is all 10 shot groups from 50 yards. Not very good. All the velocities are recorded for all to see. It was kinda windy. But my 22 Kidd super grade shot a 10 shot group that proved that it wasn’t the wind affecting the groups.

Please don’t bash me. I’m not here to argue or prove or disprove anyone. Only to post info for other people to use to help make decisions.

Interesting, I hope your new barrel solves the problem. I look forward to seeing how much it differs from the current barrel with the same ammunition.
I have been reading about 22LR accurate shooting. It seems as though every rifle likes a different type of ammunition. Sort of like center fire load development but you can't change the load, only the source.
After you test your new barrel with the same ammunition for comparison of barrel only. I would suggest that you try different types of ammunition to see what the system likes.
My Ruger Precision is on order. Will end up going through the same thing when I get it. Terrible thing too have to run hundreds of rounds of ammunition down the tube at the range. ;)

Thanks, I was checking, they offer a 16, 18 and 22 inch barrel. The rifle comes stock with an 18, I might go with the 22 when my rifle comes in. I see they are 1:15 twist. The stock barrel is 1:16 twist.
I want to play with it a little before I buy the barrel. I have a Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50 waiting to be mounted. I hope the Medium Burris Xtreme rings will be high enough.

Well. Got it all disassembled. Ready for the new barrel. Will post pics of the new barrel and install process. FYI. The neverseize that was used on the factory barrel and action was some funky gritty stuff. Almost like there was sand in the mix.

Just wondering if that gritty feeling was caused by residual glass beads. If the receiver was bead blasted before final finishing, maybe some beads were left in the threads by accident. Doesn't take many to give you that feel. Just a thought...

I think the groups weren't bad at all for a store bought rifle.
One hole groups outside are not the norm. Ppl post pics of the best they shoot ...when they can't repeat it over and over.
Inside a quarter at 50yds is really good for a store bought grade.
An unlimited will shoot a dime every shot.

Now, Ruger calls it Ruger “Precision” Rimfire. Mine was anything but precision. I shot numerous different brands/types of ammo, and there was nothing close to precision at 50 yards in calm conditions. I tried over an over again to get it to shoot consistently but it fell apart every time. Then, I put on a Green Mountain aftermarket barrel and bingo, now i have precision!

Well. A little delay in the process. The barrel will not be delivered until Monday 2-25-19. Was planning on finishing the upgrade and testing this weekend at my newly built range in my back yard, but that’s not gonna happen.

Looking forward to seeing your results.

I have plenty of ammo for the new barrel. Hopefully all goes well. Still waiting on the brown truck. Lol
