Ruger Precision Rifle 243 win

has anyone got to put actual hands on one of these around here yet? I know 2 guys that has shot em, not internet acquaintances, and one broke the trigger during reassembly and the only hasn't pushed it to any reasonable distance yet. with the twist i think this would be a great option for the kids to using 105 amax and retumbo. any insight is appreciated.

Kids heck...I am kind of interested in one in 243 and see a 6XC barrel on it in the future. I wonder how hard they are to get? Looks like a real nice rifle for the money, I have never seen one yet. just looking over it on Ruger's web site it looks good to me. I have a 6.5 creedmoore and im kind of burned out on it. shoot's Great. Hornady Brass is junk. so yea a 243 would work to play with.

anyone have any thought's on this rifle ?

Looked one over pretty closely at the last Roanoke VA gun show. Trader Jerry's, a local dealer, had one in .243 for $999.

Could visualize it with irons set up for a cross the course gun.

Have no idea how they will hold up. I have heard that Hawk Hill Custom has made some cut rifled barrels for them but have not verified it.

Probably won't be long before a lot of "Tacticool Bling" is available for it since the stock and front tube are AR15 AR10 items and the trigger is a modular item. The dealer told me someone is making a two stage trigger for them may be true or may be sales talk.

I would wait until they have a track record in the hands of experienced shooters and smiths before I moved on one.

Ive handled one at my local cablelas and I was really impressed. If I was going to get another factory rifle, I would get one of these, hands down. Great bolt lift and throw, decent trigger (about on par with savage accutrigger) good ergonomics and adjustability, and with the barrel nut Im sure folks will be making pre fits barrels for these in no time. At the price its a no brainer to me.

Do they seem too Heavy ? OR is that in line with this style of rifle? 11.0 lbs in 243 I was thinking 10 to 11 lbs scoped would be ideal.

about right to me. Its not a hunting rifle, and its not a bench gun, so right in the middle between the two in weight is about perfect.

FJIM, I like where you're headed. As soon as I saw some of the reviews for this thing the 6XC was exactly what came to mind for me as well. I also saw a link on another forum where there's an outfit that is making a metal bolt shroud to replace the factory one, so people are already turning out aftermarket mods.

This action is first cousin to their "All American Rifle" isn't it? Did I get that name right?

Chad from LRI also says there was a few things he didnt like on the rifle that had to go. the bolt shroud or dust cover is plastic and he mentioned that when he ran it aggressively like he would in a comp he saw its flaws. Hes machining a billet aluminum replacement and also more that he wouldn't disclose.

I shot one last week in .243 with the Nightforce 22x scope.

Very accurate for sure with factory Hornady ammo. I am an AR guy so the architecture was very comfortable to me. As accurate as any good production 243 bolt gun should be. 1/2 to 3/4 MOA. Probably 1/2 MOA with handloads.

Trigger was very good, just like any accutrigger.

Recoil - a little too much for me and I am 240 lbs. I would need a brake or suppressor.

Weight - Too heavy for hunting, if I had to carry it very far - similar to a 24" AR-10. Be okay for varmit hunting shooting prone or sitting in a tree stand with a rest, and I hunt plenty with a 308 AR-10. I would guess the weight at 12 lbs total.

Fit / finish - good finish - but uses the Troy clamp on rail system that uses two small bolts to clamp the hand guard over the barrel nut. This is not a robust system in my opinion. I removed this same handguard from my personal rifles because the handguard would not stay aligned with the receiver.

Magazine - very good. Easy to load and functioned fine. Looked like plenty of room in the mag for long loads.

Bolt assembly - plastic shroud.. Not good. Bolt to receiver fit - not great either, but okay I guess.

Price - owner said he paid $1000 new off GB.

The rifle would be awesome re-barreled in 6 x 47, 6CM or something similar. Replace the handguard and install some type of muzzle control device.

I really liked it for the price. Thinking of buying one and reworking it in 6 x 47 Lapua with a good HG, suppressor and bi-pod.

I would want to understand the barrel nut and barrel extension configuration first however. Hopefully it's not another unique design that requires special parts and tools.

Handled one in .308 Win a few weeks back. I wasn't impressed. then again I am NOT a big Ruger fan. Annoys me to immediately start replacing weak parts (plastic bolt shroud--PLASTIC! Really ruger?) in order to have a reliable weapon.

I'm sure they will sell a million as they are aimed exactly right for the market. Certainly some shrewd design features as well. American innovation at it's best.

My brother bought one in 6.5 Creedmor and not really sure but never could get it to shoot what I would consider well, awesome idea and I have to give it to Ruger to come out with something like this! it seemed to be a nice rifle but I know I never could get used to the stock or get a good cheek weld so that could have been some of the accuracy problems. He has since sold the rifle. Later,

I got lucky Sunday morning and was in Cabalas when one of the guys came out of the back room with a Ruger Precision in his hand, and I said to him is that a 243- he said yes and I said I would take it. I have missed seeing the last 4 or 5 they have received-will shoot it Saturday morning and give you all a report. Carl in Yakima

I picked one up in 243 Win. paid a slight premium but, Owned it and shot around 100 rounds. I shot factory 58-95's and Hornady 105's and Berger 115 VLD's. The varmint loads actually shot sub MOA. The best groups were with the 105's and they were consistent 3/4 and better. I mounted a Bushnell 3.5-21 DMR in Vortex high rings and this was a perfect fit, I also fitted a Hollands radial break. My AICs mags worked perfect as well. I didn't shoot for groups at 400 meters just clay pigeons for fun. These were fairly easy, dialed my dope and started breaking pigeons.Things I would change:I would fit with a Metal bolt shroud, PRS stock and an ambidextrous safety. Ruger is building a good rifle and did a really good job matching the current market.

I picked up one in the Creedmoor yesterday. Mixed feelings. Mounted a NF 5.5X22 and shot 18 rounds of Hornady 129 SSTs. Not crazy with the butt stock, very front heavy, was able to hold it very steady off a bypod.
Best group .8", the rest, 1 1/4". I was told it would get better with use.
Very nice trigger!

A friend bought a 243 and has around 150 rounds thru it. It finally started shooting small groups, 1/2" after a 100 rounds. The barrel does not seem to be stress relieved as four shots will go into the 1/2" and the 5th outside the group. So, as the barrel heats, the groups open. Since the barrels are hammer forged, it might be somewhat expected.

From posts on Sniper Hide, a half a dozen have been rebarreled (243). It appears they shooters like the framework of the guns, thus the rebarreling.

I own 2 in 243. 243 is hard on barrels. They are practice guns. Nothing wrong with the plastic bolt shroud unless you fold the stock with the bolt back. The plastic just functions to keep dirt out of the bolt. Glocks are plastic. If they didn't shoot I wouldn't own them. With a custom barrel your real close to a tubb rifle and alot less money. The one complaint I have is the trigger and grip need to move forward about an inch.

So far I'm very impressed with mine. My first shot was 8 inches off the bulls eye when I was dialing my gun in. Next 3 shots are in the picture below. Well under an inch after only the first 3 shots. Mine is the .308
