Ruger M77MKII -- Re-Chambering Question

Mike in Oregon

Why is it I never hear about anything being built on this action? I have the above in a stainless 223 that I'm thinking about doing a 20 Practical build utilizing this action. Any reason I shouldn't? My thoughts are to blueprint the action and do a 24-inch MTU profile barrel.

Mike...

Mike, I wondered the same thing, and when I read Precison Shooting Magazine for decades, noting the winners/competitors rifles, calibers and actions used, I noticed that no one ever built one of these rifles on any Ruger action....ever. They are decent hunting rifles no doubt, but have never been in either the winner's circle, or used for many custom builds where prime accuracy is the goal.

Some shooters have an example that shoots well, but it seems those few are the exception rather than the general rule. Part of the issue with them is the uncommon/unusual bedding method Ruger uses for the action. Then there's the trigger.....won't go into that one. The Mauser type/controlled round feeding is another issue. No one wants to single load and have a claw extractor struggle to snap over the cartridge rim. Ruger barrels have always been suspect too, but in a custom build, the OEM barrel is hardly ever used. A few of the custom smiths I've used in the past will not work on these actions either, and that tells me much.

Almost all the custom builds I've done over the years were based on what I learned from reading, specifically PS Magazine. The Ruger action may be a good candidate for a hunting rifle, but it's just not the 'hot ticket' for any custom build where accuracy is the prime concern. That's all JMO and experience.

In the big game hunting world, it happens quite often. For varmint hunting and competition shooting, the controlled-round feed eliminates single-feeding so seems most guys opt for push-feed.
I thought of the controlled feed, but I would just do a sled or follower, right?

Thought you were on your safari in the great outback

Then there's the issue of the claw extractor having to work hard at snapping over the cartridge rim...no bueno, and it'll break doing this eventually.

As for the outback, yup, leaving very soon. The back of my truck looks like staging for an op by ST6. ;)

Only reason for considering was to save 4-digets on a custom action.

There probably has been more customs built on factory actions like the M700, Sako and others that don't come to mind right now than any Ruger. The M700 is probably the winner in this regard, being push-feed that lends itself much better for single loading, plus there are more aftermarket accuracy items for that action than any other, bar none.

You'll (probably) be in 4 digits if you have a smith blueprint an action and chamber and install a top line barrel anyway. I looked into doing a similar thing to your plan (though with a R700 action) and found that you didn't save a whole lot, and ended up with something that could leave doubts about performance.

The rifle is sentimental to me, not selling. I thought I could just repurpose the action, spend a little money on it (blueprint/true) and put a quality barrel on it and be good. My bad!

Mike, there's no reason not to do that if it's what you want. I suggest you contact PacNor right there in Oregon. They not only make excellent barrels but can also fit them to your action.

Good shootin' :).-Al

I just put a new barrel on a M77 tang safety. It was originally a 222 Swift but I put a varmint weight 6mm BR on it. It single feeds good from the factory magazine and the push over the rim is not bad. Install a Rifle Basic sear connector and the trigger improves a lot.

The long extractor in a Ruger has no problem snapping over the rim of a single loaded cartridge. In fact, the early 77's were actually a push feed. The Ruger77 action responds equally to the same truing procedures used on any action.
I built a rifle on a Ruger 77 action, about 45 years ago. I converted it to single shot, re-cut the thread and locking lug seats and faced the bolt, while altering the bolt for use with a rimmed cartridge. I altered the receiver to mount a Canjar 700LP trigger. The barrel was a Hart HV chambered in 30/40 Krag. Best aggs were around .300. This was shooting Sierra 168's and 4895. So, this was hardly a serious BR rifle (hence the 30/40 Krag chambering) yet it shot pretty well. I still have the rifle, now with a longer, faster twist, barrel. I have not tried it lately but expect it will shoot OK. My point is, although it's a lot easier to base a rifle on a modern, custom, action, and the results are likely to be better, it can be a lot of fun to re-purpose actions like the Ruger. WH

You can, this is built off of a 77 MK 2. 6 TCU.20230505_173814.jpg
