Ruger m77 .22 hornet rebarrel

Hi,
Can't seem to sell the Ruger as my friends son loves it so much.So now, to get it to group respectably.
Would like to keep the same contour and barrel length . my loads will be mostly 50gr at 2370 fps (3 shoot group @ 100m x 100mm)
Can anyone advise me what make of barrel? what twist to look for ect?
Don't want to spend a fortune,just enough to get respectable groups.

Have you tried the Hornady 35 gr. V-max and 13 GR. of Lil'Gun. Shoots very well in every Hornet I've heard of. My own Ruger 77 Hornet wouldn't shoot under 1 1/2" until I tried that load, it's a consistant 3/4" in my rifle. But if you do decide to re-barrel I would suggest a .22 K-hornet as the K version eliminates a lot of case problems with the Hornet. Much better case life.

Besides trying a different load which might show some improvement. Try bedding the action and making sure the barrel is free floated.

Ruger m77 .22 hornet re-barrel

All good advice above. From what I understand headspace is an issue with US made Hornets. It would certainly be lesser expensive to ream it for the K-Hornet and headspace off the shoulder along with it reduced case stretching. If you do re-barrel consider the .17 Ackley Hornet. I presently have a Contender barrel being built by MGM in said.

Welcome to the forum, I have two Hornets just like yours and have never been able to get them to shoot correctly, I rebarreled both of them and they still shoot 3/4 at best but mostly around 1-1/4", Then one day I was talking to Jack Belk and he told me the bolts weren't true in the receivers, something wrong with the firing pin and maybe something else. The next time he is down here bird hunting I plan on sending it with him to try to fix, he can't hurt it, as it is not heavy enough for a anchor and won't shoot well enough to pass for a gun. But if I was looking to re barrel it again I would put a Krieger or Hart on it.

17 ackley hornet is the way to go,,, ive killed coyotes out past 300 yds using 20 grn v max bullets, with the one i had.

A lot of those Ruger 77 Hornets had problems with the bolt face being squre to the bore.

Have a look at CPC. The 77/Hornet has a 2 piece bolt, Randy "tightens" the bolt.

One other thing a lot of m77 22hornet shooters do is they take their bolt apart and then make a washer out of feeler gage. If I remember correctly they use a pretty thin one then put the bolt back together. Apparently it prevents the bolt from just flopping around during firing. I was thinking about doing it to mine but I only shoot mine to 100yds and I am ok with the accuracy I am getting now.
