Ruger American 17 HMR

I have one and we shoot a 100 yard matches I shoot .74 ten shoot group with the gun first time out, I like the trigger and the gun feels good when you put it to your shoulder. My brother shoot it at sage rats for three days and came home and ordered one for him self, guns out of the box have sure changed for the positive.

I personally do not care for the 17 HMR caliber. Had one for a few years.. IMO it was not s accurate as advertised and the wind plays hell with it.. Sold it and bought a 22 Mag.. Much better IMO. in fact it is my favorite rifle..

As for Rugers? I do have one rifle and two pistols. But I am by no means a Ruger guy.

Cannot directly answer your question, but if you get a "lemon", I can say from very recent experience that they will make
it right with you. I got a RA Predator in March, only to find that the chamber was reamed incorrectly, making terrible marks
on cases, and accuracy was non-existent. They had me send it in, and two weeks later it came back with a totally new
barrel. I've had similar pleasant experiences with Savage. Both have CS light years ahead of Remlington/Marlington.

I have to eat my words.. Due to a lack of 22 mag ammo around here and a plethoria of 17 HMR ammo, I purchased a 17 barrel for my 455 and installed it.. The CZ shoots worlds better than the other rifle I had. Just spent 2 days cleaning out sage rats in 2 pastures. The 17 is great out to ~ 150 yards.. I still prefer the 22 mag, but as I said ammo is scarce.

FWIW my rifle is the LUX model and comes with iron sights. I installed the barrel for the American, as I never use the iron sight and it is kinda in the way at times.. The American barrel fit just fine in the stock.

I can't speak for the Ruger brand, but I can say my Savage 17hmr is great. It has the heavy varmint barrel, and that makes it rather unbalanced for walking, but the accuracy is fantastic. But as others have said, if there's wind, accuracy will suffer. But it's ability to buck the wind is still far better than SV 22lr.

With a relatively cheap Mueller scope, I am able to consistently put 4 shots inside a nickle at 100 yards. Since I am not an intense bench rest shooter, I think this is fantastic. When I go the range, it's to make sure my rifles are sighted in for hunting.

I am thrilled, with my limited knowledge and skills, to be able to have a rifle that shoots this accurate. It's my short range groundhog gun. (In the spring/summer, I keep it zero'd in at 100 yards, in the fall, I zero it in to just under 50 yards)

W/ rifle sighted at 100 yards for groundhogs:
1) 50 yards= .16+
2) 75 yards= .33+
3) 125 yards= 1-
4) 150 yards= 2.6-

And it's my long range squirrel gun...when the leaves fall off the trees. I'll shoot out to about 60-70 yards if I can get a good rest.

Set up properly and with practice, a good rest and no wind, a quality gun like an Anschutz or CZ, in 17HMR can consistently make killing 200 yd. shots on varmints. I've found the new CCI A17 ammo to be more accurate and pack more punch than the standard ammo.

Looks like Ruger has plagiarized Savages Accu-trigger. Does the American have the two piece bolt that is found on the 77-22 rifles?
