Ruger 77/22 WHY, WHY, WHY

Lately i have been on a little bit of a rimfire kick and have been doing and contemplating a couple small builds. Love to squirrel hunt and hunt the smaller critters during the winter and they are such a blast and cheap way to shoot. So i have been pooring over and engrosed in looking at all the sites and rifles, stocks and barrels that companies offer for the different makes of rimfires. I had a 77/22 in 22mag that i bought from Clark several years ago with the works and also had bought a Volquartsen light weigth barrel in 17 hmr. If i could kick myself in the a** i would do it twice and as hard as i can for trading it off. It was the best rimfire i have had out of all of them and to be honest the only one i really needed to hunt with. So anyhow, i am looking at Clarks site recently and was looking at the bolt action builds he is doing and noticed that if you wanted one it was an extra 100 bucks for the newer one,s because they are threaded? WHAT, WHATS going on here. Are they changing over to threading their barrels now when everyone else has been going the opposite direction. I really like the fact that you can buy extra barrels from other companies and do the stuff yourself. I was thinking on looking for a clean used one but if i do i will have to make sure it is not a current model. So, am i understanding this correct or in a tizzy for nothing. Would it not cost more to do it that way? The new rifles are becoming very expensive. I like the CZ and wish they would offer their rifles in a laminate hunting version as i would not want the wood stock or thumbhole one.

I here ya, i took my dog for a run this morning and now just finishing up a 24 oz columbian dark roast coffee, I'm primed right now ;D But if i am hearing this right i am :o

I think Ruger is responding to the very common complaints that their stuff doesn't shoot as good as Savage and CZ. Maybe they will tighten up the tolerances on the bolt assy. Their main design emphasis is on ease of manufacture and assembly and any change that alters this equation must seem important to them.

I am sure their is a boat load of the rifles that you can switch the barrels out their new and used for sale and will be no shortage but with the new one,s being changed the way they are i would think it will kill their sales and only help the others out with the ease of changing the barrels. I have a bolt from CPC in my 10/22 and i also see that he offers bolt work on the 77/22,s. Has anyone here had that modification done to their bolt and if so what do you think about it and did you see an improvement?

True, but their are lots of people like me that can not leave well enough alone ;D The cost of getting a barrel blank and the cost of shipping to and from along with the barrel work has to far exceed in cost than doing it the other way. I guess it will be some time and digging to see what kind of accuracy people are getting.

A pointless tizzy. So if you don't want it threaded, buy a used one. You're complaining about the price and want a new barrel anyway. About 15yrs ago I had one of those actions threaded, it wasn't cheap.
