Ruger 77/22 Hornet

I was looking for another Ruger 77/22 VBZ 22 Hornet. I looked on the web site and no longer available !!! Is the Green Mountain the same thing with just the UGLY stock (IMO) ??
Thx again,
Rmist

I looked at it and it looks bitchin with that stock if you want an opinion. I wouldn't even hesitate to buy one with such a nice stock, and if you don't like the barrel ,change it. The hornets made by ruger are kinda hit or miss.I had one that was really inaccurate hoever I have a friend who has a few and they shoot good.

As per the Ruger site the 77/22 is till being made.. Never heard of a VBZ The Green Mountain is just a stainless version with a laminated stock. Here's the skinny on the Ruger 77/22 Hornet. I have one so I feel qualified to comment.. If I were doing it over I'd buy a CZ.. Why you may ask? Cause I ended up sinking another $200 into the Ruger to get it to shoot. Mine shoots pretty good now.. Not a tack driver but will get er done most of the time.. The Ruger is so pretty and feel so good in hand. Mine wouldn't group under an 1-1/2" when I got it. In fact the 3rd shot stuck the brass in the chamber. Hornaday 35 grain factory ammo.. Sent the rifle to Ruger and of course they found nothing wrong, neither did Hornaday.. So I was going to sell it, but no luck and being the ornery ol'phart that I am I was going to get this gun to shoot somehow. So I sent the thing off to Randy at CPC. He recut the chamber to a match chamber, put a target crown on the barrel , fixed the trigger and made a proper shim for the two piece bolt, which is most of the problem.. The only saving grace in the whole deal was that I got the rifle for a good price to start with.. Still woulda been cheaper and a lot less heartburn if I'd a bought a CZ to start with..

So now you've been warned as I was..

Apparently I got a good one, as my 77/22 Hornet shoots fine, although there is a caveat that may or may not have something to do with that - it came out of the shipping box brand new and went straight to a local 'smith where I lived at the time to be re-chambered to K-Hornet before it was ever fired. ::)

I have owned a BUNCH of Hornets--Winc 43,70-Sako L46,P72,P78 and 2 77/22's and they are as tough as any to load for--Mine were "Some Day" shooters somedays they would shoot and somedays not.

I just purchased a 77/22 and decided to make it a "K" as I like the difference in case AKA Tru shoulder. One of the Hornet Experts "Vincent" who resides on Rimfire Central has a BUNCH of experience with the Hornet and it is worth reading his article on Loading for the Hornet.
He also states ALL HORNET's should be K-Hornets.

Good Luck
Jim

The VBZ is a brown laminated stock with a 24" varmint taper barrel in a grey stainless. The Green Mountain looks the same except the color of the stock. The walnut stocked hornet has a blued 20" light weight barrel.

That's a excellent write up by Vincent. I own a CZ just don't like the way it feels or looks. I have a James Cahoon single shoot follower in it to shoot the 40gr V-max's. It does shoot very well.
The VBZ that I have does shoot just as well and only adjusted the trigger. I keep hearing all the negatives about the Ruger 77/22...my experience is not that at all with the ones I have.
I might have to try a K Hornet one of theses days.
Thanx again

I have a 77/22 hornet and when i got it accuracy was terrible. 2" @ 100 was a good group. I had it re-chambered to K but the accuracy did not improve much. So, after shimming the bolt and a new Shilen barrel it shoots rather well now. Five slow shots with no wind will give a consistent 1/2" . Maybe not great but a tremendous improvement.

Mine (Ruger VBZ 22 Hornet) shoots just fine thank you. Always has and always will! Nothing done to it all factory gun.
