Ruger 77/22 - 22 Hornet seating depth

I just got a Ruger 77/22 VBZ in 22 Hornet. I want to load 40gr v-max bullets. But the magazine is 1.820" in length. Meaning to feed I would have to be about 1.810" oal. The 40gr v-max's are very long and to be this short the bearing surface is below the the case rim. I know I could use the 35's but want to shoot the 40's. Is there a single shot follower for this rifle made by anyone? What are you guys doing with this problem? I have Hornets in CZ and a Browning that don't fall into this. Any sugestions??
Thanx

I shot the 40 gr noslers and hornadys...thats how i get the OAL..I just seat until they feed through the clip..my hornet seems to shot them that way just fine..I have same rifle

I tried the same thing on my old 77/22 hornet and decided that the max load of W296 and 35gr vmax were grouping better and shooting over 3000fps.

I would look at using 40gr hollowpoints if you could find them as they might be shorter. Otherwise just feed them single shot.

I have been shooting the 77/22H for many years and ran into the same problem of loaded length where a longer OAL shot very well, but the shorter mag length load did not. I took the magazine apart, crudely milled out the plastic front piece with a old end mill bit and a drill press and carefully filed the front metal feedlips area to be much thinner. VOILA ! Although the mag functions best with one less cartridge I have enough clearance for my longer 40 v-max load. Internet instructions are available for taking down and reassembling the the 22 LR mag; the hornet mag is of the same design. Look and figure closely first. As an alternative I found the Speer 40 grain high speed soft point to shoot very well too in the standard magazine. Jerry

I have been using the hornet for 40years,im a out fitter, and its one of my favorit guns, the max,ovl is 1.722, i shave a ruger 77 and set mine at 1.800, and they feed well, the hornets have a long chamber,so the key is to crimp them, as you cant get them close to the lands and groves..mine shoots well with H lil gun 12gr. with 30 to 55gr. bullets, and i just size about 1/4in of the neck... in the cold winter i use 11gr. with cci small rifle mag. primers...keep them in a dime at 100yds,,..
