ruger 338 win mag

got a friend wanting to do some trading, he has a 338 win mag in a ruger m77 mark 2. dont really want this cal, but its at a good price. dont know much about the caliber, what can i expect? whats the recoil like on it. would only be using it for deer and maybe black bear, bear are becoming populated here lately, but think it is a over kill for my use.i am trading a 300 win mag in an encore, for the reson i dont like being killed when i shoot it. need some advice. have tried to trade the encore before, liked it a first but then changed my mind, everyone had a 300 or a 7mm so i had to have it too. but getting older, i going back to something i can stand to shoot. think i can trade on the ruger at the gun shop. really only reason im thinking on trading for it, but if i get stuck with it, you know i will have to shoot it.

have read about 338 lapua, is it anything like the 338 win mag?

If you didnt enjoy the recoil from the 300 Win Mag then suggest you absolutely pass on the .338. It can be a real bruiser, especially if the stock does not fit you well.

I shoot 338 win mags. The recoil is a little less sharp but it's right there, ( I also shoot a 300 mag). I is a over kill for the hunting you described. I use my 338's for elk, moose, oryx. The Lapua is lot bigger case than the Win. I would use the 338 on bear when you want penetration. I like to shot through my game, they bleed on both sides if the don't drop in place.

thanks for response. talked to lacol gun shop, he said he could give around $350 for it on trade.

is that a good deal on this rifle. have no idea what its worth.
