Ruger 22 hornet

Hi Steve,

Not to be a negative Nellie, but the ruger hornet I had was the worst shooting Ruger I ever owned. No matter what I tried it still shot like a shotgun.

Lot's of old threads around on making the 77 shoot, but to me, it wasn't worth the effort. I sent it down the road...and after I did the new owner told me it was the best shooting gun he ever had. Sad for him I guess.

With that said, I hope others chime in and can offer encouragement.

Anyboy shoot a Ruger on here.and how do you like it and ideas on loads to try.thanks Steve
Snert and myself had the same scenario. My 77/22 was the worst shooting Ruger that I have ever owned. I sent it back to Ruger in NH at the request of some female big wig at Ruger in CT. She told me that Wilson was supplying the barrels for that rifle at the time and Ruger had a lot of complaints about those barrels not shooting very well. To make a long story short, I had a trigger job done on it and when they found out in NH that I had a modified trigger in it, they told me that in order to work on it they would have to put all new factory trigger parts back in it and that they wouldn't return the modified parts back when it was done. I got so bullshit at them, that I told them to send it back to Sparkie's in Webster, MA where it was shipped from and I told them I would never buy another Ruger product as long as I lived. When Sparkie received it, I told him to sell it for me which he did. That rifle was a POS.

Accuracy issues of the older Ruger Hornets were largely due to the two-piece bolts; the newer ones are (allegedly) much better. I have a CZ American .22H, but if a newer-version Ruger had been on the same dealer's rack I wouldn't have had a problem giving it a try, mainly for its longer/heavier barrel.

I have the walnut stocked blued 77/22 Hornet. Has the 2-piece bolt. I bought the shim kit from Sinclairs, I think, cant remember for sure. Found the right shim and it shoots 12.0 of lil gun and 35 vmax's amazingly accurate. I have done nothing else to it. Maybe I got lucky, but I would not hesitate to get another.

Thanks for starting this thread. I was debating to go with a CZ or a Ruger after reading this and seeing Snert’s and Jim’s comments I think you just saved me some money and some headaches. CZ it is.

I don’t think anybody expects a hornet to shoot hairs off a nats ass but when you buy a rifle knowing your gonna have to mod it before you even began it’s a turn off.

After you get that CZ, make it a K! I liked my K hornet in the contender. Someday I will get another.

I bought one cheap, because the guy could not make it shoot. Bedding was HORRIBLE. Ordered a Pacnor super match .17 .920 barrel, sent it to CPC, bedded it, JARD trigger, and now have the .17HH I wanted. IF CZ had the .17HH at the time or even admitted they were going to build on, I would have waited, but I am VERY happy the way this came out, and love the rotary mag.

I HAD SEVERAL RUGER 77 HORNETS AND NONE WERE SHOOTER BUT THEN CAME THE SAVAGE MODEL 40 DIFFERENT 22 HORNET THIS THING IS A BAD DUDE 13.6GRS OF LIL-GUN 30GR BERGER 205FED PRIMER PRINTS SOME FINE GROUPS AND MAKES SOME KINDA MESS OUT OF CROWS AT 150YDS:D:p:D

Best thing you can do to a Ruger 22 hornet is feed it hornady 35 grain Vmax and lilgun. And that will probably only make it s 1 moa gun. But they are pretty.

we have a 77/22 (not hornet) that shoots great (skeet at 200 meters), sub 1/2" at 50. all this with walmart ammo ( has been weighed and sorted by hs to be honest). I love mine

I fully back up what Park Ranger said. That Ruger was the worst/ most frustrating gun I've ever owned- 2-3"groups was the norm. God knows how many test rounds of various bullet weights/loads/ brass treatment/primer types I shot through that thing for little result! I finally tried 35 V-Maxs and it shot them half-respectably but nothing to write home about. Sold it soon after and my mental health improved immediately :)

I had one for a week back in 2008. I'm still pissed at how big of a piece of shit it was. After I had it I called Ed Matunas. I knew Ed was a Ruger guy. When I asked Ed about the rifle he told me to run from it as far as I could. Hell I can throw rocks more accurate that that piece of shit Ruger could shoot.

I have 2 a 19Cahoon and a22KHornet,the Calhoon was rebarreled by James and shoots great, the 22K I just guess I was lucky as it was and still is a good shooter after the rechamber.I have heard the early the ones were iffy. They also wont stand up to the pressure that the CZ can handle.
