Ruger 10/22 22 Mag Conversion

I was curious what the basic differences are in the std 10/22 and the 22 Mag. Obviously the barrel and magazine, but I was wondering if you can convert to the 22 Mag without a total rebuild.

From what I have read the 22 mag version uses completely different parts than the 22lr version even if it looks the same. I'm not sure that Ruger ever got the 22 mag version to function as well as the basic 22lr version and it might not be in production anymore. Hoping to hear from people who have shot the mag version.

The 10/22 Magnum had a longer steel receiver as compared to the shorter 10/22 aluminum receiver. There is a longer bolt that was very prone to cracking, and a heavier hammer return spring. The magazine and barrel were specfic to the magnum as well. I believe someone has tried to cut the 10/22 standard receiver into a magnum receiver, but I don't know if it ever became functional. They stopped producing them magnum a while ago, probably because of the bolt cracking. They material they used to get the bolt heavier was prone to cracking, and a more expensive material wouldn't have been cost beneficial. Since then the magnum has been quite the collectors item, with NIB originals going for over $1000, and used ones going for 700-800. Some people have tried to convert them to 17HMR, but very few were sucessful as the 17hmr pressure curve is a little harder to tame without having out of battery ignition. Select Fire makes an 80% 10/22 Magnum that you finish yourself, drill a few holes, thread a few holes, and it's ready. I haven't done the Magnum, but I have done the 80% 10/22 LR and it wasn't too difficult. Well, that's my rant, any other things I can help with let me know, or check out rimfirecentral.com, tons of good info although as of lately it's starting to seem slightly hostile with "know it alls" and people who just can't hold back their opinion. Just ask how to convert a 10/22 to a 10/17M2, you will get more posts telling you to not do it than telling you what worked for them. There have been successful ones, but everyone just wants to put everyone else down.

I have a 10-22 Mag that I've been very happy with. I'll have to do some looking for information about the bolt cracking.

A 10/22 Magnum is built much stronger in all components than a standard 10/22 LR to deal with the Magnum cartridge. I would not think it safe or cost effective to do a conversion. In any event there are several companies currently building semi-auto 22 Magnum rifles in a variety of prices (including CZ, Kel-Tec, Magnum Research, Vorquartsen and LH Precision) so why bother with a conversion.

I have an LH Precision 10/22 Magnum. Just the recoil lets me know it is no 22 LR rifle. I have it for sale because I am selling nearly all of my varmint rifles. Unlike the standard 10/22 the market for my rifle is very small. Offering it at 1/2 what I paid for it new, has gotten no replies.
