Ruger 1 question

Helping a buddy develop a handload for his 300 Win Mag. Nothing really grouping so checked scope/bass screws. Then found that the angled screw that holds the foreend on was loose. Could this explain the poor grouping and the vertical strings? Thx.

Possibly by allowing the forearm to contact the barrel, especially with pressure on a front bag. Sometimes placing a spacer between the forearm hanger an the band to slightly spring the hanger and give clearance to the barrel will help. Try a piece of rubber gasket. Also rest the forearm on the bag as close to the receiver as possible to keep the weight of the firearm from forcing the forearm into contact with the barrel.

There is a fair bit to read about getting #1s to shoot and most of it has to do with the forearm.

Shooting a 2 piece stock is different. Any pressure needs to be consistent and contact with the barrel makes a difference.

You can try several things to verify if the forend stock is causing problems. You can try shooting with the forend removed resting the hanger bar alone on the front bag. You can also try a small wooden wedge between far end of hanger & barrel. Also a rubber "o" ring between forend screw hanger helps. Good luck!
