rugar 77 v t 223

carl1575

I am still in the car business after 53 years
My brother loaned me his 77 223 he has had for years Leupold 6.5x20 scope-nice gun,but has stock factory trigger. I have seen drop ins advertised what should put in it and are they really do it your self units? Carl F in Yakima

Thanks Ray,you just confirmed what I was thinking.Carl F in Yakima

Carl, if it's an older model, the stock trigger has some nice adjustments and can be very useable. Pull off the stock and you should see a pair of screws on the front of the trigger housing for travel, tension. Unless you really need a custom trigger, this one can be made very good.

My 257 Roberts lightweight 77 got a Timney - went in just like the instructions said, including about 30 seconds with some sandpaper wrapped around a pencil (then a little varnish to seal the work) for clearance on one side, an operation needed on some 77 stocks for that trigger. The 77-22 Hornet got a Rifle Basix. Very happy with both triggers.

Based on what ReedG said, I'll have to take apart my 77 22RF and see what it's got; it's the one of the three I bought used, and the only one that had a decent trigger out of the box.

Like ReedG said they can be adjusted pretty good! It takes some timing with sear there will be three Allen's and give your self an hour to tinker but I got mine just under a pound with no over travel...Most people like to replace it and get rid of all the slack!

Thanks guys,I am going to try the playing with the stock trigger, nothing to loose. If I am not happy with it,order a new one. With my old gun smith I wouldn't have thought of doing it my self but my new one,I have forgot what I sent him or what I wanted done by the time he calls me to pick up my gun. not quite that bad,but real close. thanks for the help

If this is a the 2 stage trigger version, I was able to just take it apart and polish the mating surfaces with a cheap Harbor Freight buffer. It is below 2#s, as I recall and it breaks nice and clean with a very consistent let off. It shot a lot better than I was expecting also. Consistently less than .5 moa with the 45gr walmart stuff, and maybe a little better that with some hand loads. I was pleasantly surprised, it is 12tw barrel though, so it's not exactly a long ranger.

Carl,in response to your original question, yes, the drop-in from Rifle Basix is exactly that,"drop-in" I used one in my 77-17 and it was a godsend.I have others like a Canjar in a Rem 40X,but those are too specialized for general use. Tom

I love canjar and wish they was still making triggers, I posted about rifle basix cause that was the only one I new was making them for Ruger vt models.. Little research and found this one that adjust down to 8oz and has a wider shoe...I like a wide shoe!!!

I read your link and would like to mention I to like Ruger I own a couple of there rifles one 7mm and one 243 win vt also a 10/22 along with a gp161 357 and a lcp 380.. looking to buy a sr-40 next but when it comes to build a target rifle I would definitely choose a Remington based custom Round action (Stiller,Borden,Surgeon,pierce)...Not because I like Remington better but because I like whats available for Remingtons... I also hate hearing Rugers are investment casted, yep so is a custom Farley Black widow and they do very well in competition!!! Plus Ruger makes everything so hard to get, you can't buy firing pin assemblies or bolts or pretty much anything without sending into them to be fitted at there discretion weather to put everything back to factory..Not very competition friendly ..

I think if you got rid of the plastic shroud and could fit it with a Jewell trigger and a recoil lug instead of a barrel nut the Ruger American would be a better candidate!!!

My Ruger is pillar and glass bedded, trigger just under a pound, 27" Hart 1-8 twist HV barrel and a fluted firing pin with a Tubbs CS spring. It shoots consistently mid to high .3's with 105-115g target bullets.
