Rube Goldberg annealing

I thought I would share some video of my prototype annealing machine. I built it specifically because I can't afford a commercially made one. Including batteries and parts, I have about $100 into the whole thing including the stuff I ruined while making it.

The concept is simple, use a 555 IC chip to time the operation. A microswitch starts the timer. The timer system holds the bar in place with an electromagnet.

Right now, I'm running 5.5 seconds in the tip of a single propane torch.

Here it is in action:

I like the idea, Very simple but effective.

If you are considering making any improvements or additional features check out something called an arduino. Very easy to program / user friendly microchip that can be had for not too much money.
