RPR .308 & 4064?

My nephew (22y) just got a RPR in .308 1/10 20" barrel, he picked up some 4064 but hasn't gotten anything else yet (bullets, brass, primers). He's new to reloading and precision style shooting as well, hoping to get him reasonably up to speed by the end of the year.

I was wondering if there were any common good loads for this gun? I'm not a .308 guy, but I was thinking of starting around 41gr under a 175gr. I have 210 primers I can donate a couple flats to him to get him started, will probably pick up some WIN brass as well.

Before I get the requisite response of "every gun is different," I know. But I also know that many times you can get close with common combinations from the same guns, like service rifle.

So, I what brass, bullets, primers and charge of 4064 should we start with?

They say 4064 or varget.. my 308 likes varget, i cant speak for 4064.

175 smk will prolly be a winner, i always use lapua brass when i can. 308 wise i use the regular lapua brass, not the palma brass.

I'm currently running 42g of I4064 with a 175sie, for my gas guns. (AR10) anything more than that is a bit hot for my particular guns. Accuracy is also improved with it downloaded at bit. I'm using Federal 210m with a Lapua case. (as usual, the lapua case lasts longer)

4064 is good to go with from 155gr to 175gr bullets no problem. Stick to book loads and don't try to chase velocity if a short barreled rifle. 4064 is a fairly coarse stick powder and doesn't tend to meter consistently with a powder thrower so charges should be weighed to insure uniformity.

With 155 gr match bullets somewhere around 43.0 grains, with 175s somewhere around 41.0 grains. Both are within "book load" charge weights but towards the top. Avoid any temptation to chase velocity at the expense of accuracy or especially safety.

Thanks for the info guys, got enough to get started for now. I'm not interested in chasing velocity, won't get him behind a chrony yet either, just going to focus safe reloading practices and looking for pressure signs.

Recently fired several groups with the following load:

42.5 gr IMR 4064
175 Gr Sierra Tipped Match King
Lapua Brass
Fed 210M primers
COAL: 2.880 (fit magazine)
Savage 110 Tactical Rifle 24" barrel with suppressor
Temp 55, Elevation 3500'
Avg Vel: 2660
SD: 6.0 - 8.0
.5" to .8" groups at 100 yds
No pressure signs

42.5 to 43.5 gr 4064 will be a winner

Set at 2.860 mag length and leave it alone

Pair with cci 200 primers

I've used 4064 and Varget with excellent results in the 308 but only with 150 and 165 grain bullets.

If your nephew gets tired of the recoil with the 175, try the Sierra 125 grain Spitzer (Pro Hunter) with 4895. My Tikka shoots sub 1/2 MOA with this combo and it's a real joy to shoot. Also a great predator round.

4064 175gr smk I found around 43.5gr is good load.

I found that a very good combination in an FN Special Police Rifle a few years back, that exact charge weight too as it happens. VarGet and H4895 will likely produce higher MVs, but the old 4064 is still a superb choice for the 308 for the 168 and 175 Sierras.
