Rough price for savage barrel set back and rechambered ?

To the OP.

I set my Competition barrels back on a regular basis.
It is very easy for me because the way I chamber, it is very easy to set the barrel up in the exact same manner as on the initial chambering job.

It takes me about an hour to set one back. I usually go about .025 the first time just to freshen up the throat.

But, if you are trying to set up a barrel that some else has previously chambered, you have no way of knowing how they set it up, and you might spend considerable time trying to get the darn thing trued up. Or even if the initial chamber is true.

That’s why most will not set back barrels.

Jackie,
Just curious how you setup your personal barrels for an easy set-back. Always nice to see how others do it, if you don't mind sharing.
Thanks, Paul

I do not chamber barrels the way most do. I use a lathe that has a headstock longer than most barres.

I determined how much the center hole in my lathe ran out, then machined an offset insert so the hole runs dead true. .

If you look at any of my competition barrels, you will se a small fit machined on the end. This fit is machined true with the barrels ID.I place a ring on this fit that just slips into the insert. I then chuck up the chamber end and rough drill it. I can then reach in with a “tenth” indicator and indicate where the throat will be. That is now two points running true. I then taper bore the drilled hole to within about .005 inch of finish. That is now the 3d point running true. This allows the reamer to be inserted about 1/3 the way with the pilot engaging the lands.

I then ream the chamber. As you notice, I establish the beast chamber I can before fitting the tenon to it’s final dimensions.

When I set a barrel back up, I place the ring on the end of the barrel and indicate the chamber. The barrel is now in the same position in the lathe as it was during the initial job.

As you can see, one of the aspects of this is making Sure the center hole in your lathe spindle runs true.

Send it to me with a 20 dollar bill for return shipping. I'll cut a fresh chamber for ya.
That's a very generous off you made. Good for you...

I have had 3 barrels set back on my 6 Creed and 6.5 Creed. It cost me $100.00 to cut, chamber and recrown each one. My issue for re chamber was I shot out the throat and could not get the jump I wanted. New barrel from Brux was $300.00, this saved me $200.

I just had one done for 180.00 It was a krieger with 300 rds on it. The original reamer had a nick on it and the brass was hard to get out.
