Rookie needs help

Hi All,
I'm going to start shooting shoot for score in the IBS Assoc. next year. Most of the shooting will be from 100/200 yds. and an occastional 300 yds. What barrel leight and twist should I get and what bullets should I use. Should I get 107 gr. SMK'S and an 1 in 8 twist or should I get 80 gr. fowler's and a 1 in 12 twist, plus what barrel leight should I use for ether bullet. Please reply. Thanks.

Regards,

Robert

Think you need to define what you are going to shoot.

100-300 is normally called short range BR, they have matches for group and then score.

Group is ruled by the 6ppc

Score has the 30 BR and that is the go to round.

Sierra 107s are normally used in the LR comp ie 600-1000 and larger case than the PPC such as the 6 br minimum.

suggest you go to local br matches for type you want talk to them and then buy good used gun for half price of new one. All it takes is another barrel worst case if the gun is set up right.

www.benchrestcentral.com is the BR website and lists used BR guns for for sale.

www.benchrestcentral.com/shooterscorner/ is website for Shooters Corner in NJ run by Bob White. He has about 50-100 used BR guns for sale at any one time and is known for being totally reliable and accurate in his descriptions. He also has tons of BR reloading equip for sale. Scopes, dies, tools, rests, bags, etc and at reasonable prices.

Thanks Bounty Hunter,
I'm going to shoot score at 100/200/300 yds, most of the I'll be shooting 100/200 yds. I already have a brand new Rem 700 SS short action and Bob Green of York, Pa. will do my metal work. I think I'm going with the 80gr Fowler's and 1 in 12 twist. What barrel leight would be go for this setup.

Regards,

Robert

Before you make up your mind about the cartridge to use, go to a match or two and see what the top shooters are using. There are several versions of score shooting and the equipment used in one is not necessarily the best for another. One thing you will probably eventually learn the hard way is that bigger bullets,30 cal) are a very real advantage over the smaller,6mm) calibers. And they are just as accurate.

All of the above and then when you have decided on caliber make sure you know what weight restrictions there are so you can build your rifle to come in under weight. So if there is a 13lb 8oz weight limit you weigh action with bolt, mounts, scope and stock attached and you will know what weight you have left for the barrel and your barrel maker or smith will advise as to contour and length best for the weight, length doesn't need to be over 24" for short range stuff
