Rookie 6 BR question

Gents,

Read here a bunch. I have been shooting/reloading for a 30-06 for about 8 years.

I would like a lighter-recoiling rifle for a range/practice rifle and 7.5 to 8 lb varminting rifle. I was thinking of chambering her in 6 BR.

Questions:
1. Thoughts on the chambering? Should I go the normal route and use a .223? I'm not particularly recoil sensitive, but I would like to put 60 or 80 rounds down this rifle per trip, as I have time (I have little kids, so life sometimes doesn't make that possible!). Putting 60 rounds through my 7.5 lb 30-06 is a bit much--my max is about 40 rounds before I want to quit.
2. What's the difference between the various 6 BRs? I'm intending to use the one Lapua makes brass for...but I don't think that one is the 6 mm BR Lapua for some reason. PTG lists several reamers for 6 mm BR.

Thanks gents for helping a rookie out!

6 br Norma(Lapua brass). Use Lapua brass(blue box). Depending on what you are going to shoot bullet wise, dictates reamer specs, and barrel twist. Very accurate, easy to load for and nice to shoot all day. A lighter rifle for varmiting would probably be for 85 gr or lighter bullet.

Thanks. I should have been more specific!

PTG lists a:
6mm BR match
6mm BR SAAMI
6mm BR Norma CIP

Are all these 6 mm BRs? I think my confusion is they don't specify Rem or Norma (except for the Norma CIP).

yes they are all 6br. They have different neck diameter and freebore. They are all norma chambers. 6br rem brass will shoot in a norma chamber.

FYI: New Lapua brass comes in a blue box and has a thinner neck than the old gold box stuff.

You should call PTG and explain what you want and they will help you.

remington brass will shoot in Norma chamber but Lapua blue box will not fit in Remington chamber, the base of the Lapua brass is just a hair wider than the Remington brass.

go with the 6mm BR Norma if you are shooting heavy bullets but if you want to shoot lighter bullets get a shorter freebore.

8 twist for the BR Norma (90-115gr), 13.5 twist for lighter bullets (65-80gr)

Mine is a 10 twist and I've shot from 65-95 and found good load for all of'em. They are a fun cal. to shoot and you don't have to worry bout having a sore shoulder afterwards. LOL

Considering how you defined the use of the rifle I would be inclined to go with a .223 Rem. Not sure you would realize the accuracy benefits of the 6mmBR with a varmint style gun. A 6BR doesn't recoil all that much, but for a varmint rifle I'd rather have the even milder recoil of the .223 over the 6BR, especially in a light rifle. But then I stop well short of 20 rounds in my .30-06. I don't like getting the crap beat out of me any more.
