RL15 & 80gr .223 Question

With my new Savage 12 F/TR 1-7 .223 rifle, I've decided to go with 80gr bullets, specifically I've got some of that weight in Sierra SMKs, Bergers and Hornady Amaxs....

I know there are several powders that are likely to do well here for med to long range work, but I'd appreciate some feedback on your experiences with RL15 in this area.

I use that combo myself in a bolt gun and an AR. Works great for me with the bullets seated at 2.5. I started at 24.0gr and went up till I reached the 3000fps mark.

Hello! I have been using RL15 with 80gr SMK's in my AR for years with very good results, but I am shooting a 20 inch barrel. I also shoot them in another AR with a 26in. Kreiger barrel and a Savage 10fp with a 24 in. bbl. and they both shoot that combination. I am supprised that the 9 twist bolt gun shoots them OK. I have been using 24.5 grains of RL15 with the SMK 80's. You should start out with a lighter load with the longer barreled gun. Give it a try, it should work. BILL

i am shooting a service rifle, 24 gr of RL15, ww or LC brass, wolf or CCI br primers, 80.5 bergers 15 thou jump through saturn barrel. workd well if i do my part. Work your load for your rifle but i think you are on the right track.

My favorite load is 24.5gr of RL15 in an 8" twist barrel. Good to 600yd in either a 20" AR barrel or 26" bolt-gun barrel for me.

I use Rl 15 and 75g amax in my Savage lrpv 223 AI. 8 Tw. It works well for me.
