RL-17 in the 300 RSAUM

Went to alliant's website and fond the only load listed for a 165Gr Spbt was 65 Gr's. of RL-17, so I loaded up five rounds and headed for the range. Glad I only loaded five as the bolt lift was a little stif in my 12 twist Hart barrel and accuracy was less than good. Back to the range with a 63 Gr. load and things were much better, bolt fell right open and groups shrunk close to the half inch mark. Went this morning with a 64Gr. load and things got even better, bolt still opens freely, no dimples on the primers wich I switched by the way from WLRM's to standard Russian's,much cooler). Next chance I get I will chronograph the load to see what the velocities are. Here is this mornings group, now to see if it will remain consistant:

Beautiful group.

Thanks for this info. I have a Sendero 300 Saum and I have 5 pounds of RL17 needing to be put to use.

Did I read you are using Norma cases?

Tim, yes I am using Norma Brass that I purchased from Midway about a year ago. I bought 100 rounds and now I wish I would have bought 500. The Remington brass will work fine however, just need to pay a little more attention to sorting and case prep. Oh yeah the Rem brass runs about 20Gr's. lighter on avgerage than the Norma.
