Rings & bases....

I have had it with stuff coming loose...& or breaking.. I won't mention the company I wont buy from anymore but their Q. D. system blows & the reg. mount with the big goofy windage screws loosen up all the time...Hence the question.. When mounting a big heavy scope, nightforce or burris 8 X 32 power 56 mm ao front lens.. what is going to be the best rings & bases for my uses...Mostly shooting from a bench Or driving my truck & a portable bench right out to where I hunt..weight does not matter...I bought a warne set of bases & rings ..they look alot like Talley...But a tactical rifle shooter suggested Badger ordinance, huge money!!!..What do u guys use & why?? I appreciate your responses...mike in ct

Nightforce says to use one piece steel bases with the 1913 picatinny pattern cross bolt bases and good quality steel rings to match the bases. Of couse they recommend theirs, they are sesigned to take the weight. They say don't use Weaver or dovetail bases. I am having some problems with a new Nightforce 8-32x56BR scope using Burris 2 piece double dovetail mounts and Signature bases which I think should hold anything fine even with that 2# scope on it. Richard Franklin says that the Signature rings are the best and he uses them his varmit rifles with the same BR scope that I have. The Tactical Precision, Leupold Mark4,Badger, Smith, FA Interprises, Farrel, Lightforce, and similar bases and rings should work fine. I am now in the process of getting a set of 2 piece Lighforce bases, one piece not available for my particular gun), and Warne Tactical rings. I think that I will bed the bases to the action and use loctite on all of the torque head screws. If that doesn't bring my group size back down then i'll send the scope back to Nightforce for testing. Doesn't seem to be much conversation on the web to indicate that this is a real problem, but Nightforce that 99+% of any accuracy problwms with their scopes is that.
Good luck with yours, JimDee

Mike,

You didn't mention what action. If it's a Remington I'd go along with the Badger rings. You could save a couple of bucks on the base by going with a Ken Farrell, I.O.R., or T.P.S. which go for about $60-$75. Best price on Badgers would be Triad Tactical.

If you don't need super heavy duty I've never had a problem with Kelbly two screw rings on Davidson bases holding my Nightforces on my competition rifles. Sinclair can fix you up on both those items for probably less than the price you'd pay just for the Badger rings.

If you need Gorilla strong Badgers are unbeatable. It always cost just a little more to go first class.

No one mentioned talley rings & bases...??? anyone using those??I like the Burris signiture rings my 270 sako sports those..but that gun is 30 years old I swear this new stuff is not made as well...I had a screw shear off the rear mount of my 6.5 X 20 leupold, leupold mounts/rings.. That sits on a model 70 Stealth A big heavy gun in only 22-250 caliber..it is like nothing for recoil...Removing a QD from my little 222 rem varmint the lever sheared off a while back..Anything with those big goofy windage adjustable rear screws just seem to loosen up..I'm pretty frustrated with paying 75 to 80 bucks for brand name mounts & rings & having problems...more later, mike in ct

Mike -- I have been testing some rings/base by Glen Seekins in ID. I have been impressed in every way so far.

He is also making a 4-screw ring which is only 3/4" wide instead of 1" like in the pic.

They are all hard aluminum alloy and you will not strip the threads.

Price is very reasonable too.

burris tactical 30mm rings 39.95 a set.they look just like JB's 6 screws on the caps and all.the bottom has 5/16 cross bolts with 1/2 nuts.

I went with Talleys on a set of rifles--three Remingtons and a Nesika. For the Remingtons, I had custom bases made, timed with the bases on the Nesika,Borden-made bases). This way I can interchange scopes on those four rifles and on the Borden rifle that is due later in the year.

I really love the Talley lever-lock QD rings 'cause I can take my scope off during transport and put it back on when I get to where I'm going. They're rock solid and repeatable. Like so many other suppliers, Gary and Dave are also great people to do business with.

The one caveat is that I wouldn't put Talley bases and rings on an average factory action. Well, at least not on a Remington. The surface of the action is too uneven, about what you'd expect from something finished with a belt sander) and the holes are always misaligned. If the bases aren't mounted true, you'll put a lot of stress on your scope. Since the rings are split vertically, they'd be tough, if not impossible to lap in decently.

Mike,
I have had very good luck with Near mfg,www.nearmfg.com). You can get one of his bases for the savage,I have a base and rings on my 10FP) on www.cabelas.com for WAY under what he charges on his site. The rings are gorgeous, and are NOT going to let you down. For $175 I would hope they wouldn't. If you want to never worry again I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these. Rich Near is also a great guy to talk with about your setup. Hope this helps.

Glen Seekins rings and mounts are backcountry hunter tough! Good stuff.

Badger makes one heck of a mount and a good set of rings too. I took one heck of a fall onto some rocks last summer - rifle smacked the rocks hard. My zero didn't shift at all. I attribute that to the Badger base & rings and also to the stout USO scope that I was using at the time. The Badgers are spendy, but very strong.

Might be well worth having a smith upgrade your setup to bigger screws instead of the little stock ones.

Regards, Guy

I have three Nightforce scopes. I am using them on three Nesika actioned rifles, and two Remington 700s. No problems with them. Had them on and off these five rifles for almost a year. There is a slight change of impact when taking them off and putting them on the same rifle. About an inch at 100yds. I have more rifles than I have Nesika scopes, so I need the QDs. Otherwise I would go with the straight Warne rings. I have no proof, but I feel that the non detachable will be stronger. I have to loosen and move the forward ring forward or backward when changing from a Nesika to a Rem 700 or back. The base to base lengths are different. bcott
