rings and base help

I am building a 6.5-284 mostly for varmint shooting and some minor competition. 700 long action, Krieger barrel with a remy varmint taper, nightforce scope. I was leaning towards a leupold base with burris signature rings with the 20 moa inserts. I expect to shoot 600+ yards maybe out to 1000. Now I am having 2nd thoughts. I dont want to spend all the money on the rifle and scope then put them together with an inadequate mounting system. You can always spend more money, but not sure of the benifits. As long as all is secure the leupold base and burris rings should work, and I like the inserts not leaving marks on a 1200.00 dollar scope. Suggestion?

'Should work just fine, although I would use Weaver style bases, and the Burris rings that match.

There are no .020 inserts available in the 30 mm rings, only .010, and they are not true MOA anyways...
The Signature rings are very capable of doing a super job of holding the scope with out marking the scope up, with or with out a Leupold base.. I would look into EGW's picatinny bases for the Z series Burris Signature rings and never wish I did things different......
EGW make the bases in .005-.010-.015-.020-.025 MOA'S and they are just under $40.00.... If you have trouble finding one let me know........

What is egw? I assume its a picatinny rail or a weaver type base? What type of material is it constructed from? Is there a difference in the spec between a picatinny rail and a weaver base? They look very similar. When the rings are attached to the base do you recomend using lock tite?

The nightforce has the 2R reticle. What amount of offset in the base would be best for shooting out to 1000?

Thanks for the advice. Very helpful.

Egw is Evolution Gun Works. They make 1911 parts, Pic. Rails for a bunch of actions and their work is great. I have two of them and they are right around $40. I will personally never buy another Pic.base for $100+ as long as EGW keeps making theirs. They also make a great set of very precise EDM rings for Pic. rails for about $80. .

The EGW is a great base i have two and am happy with them, they are made out of alum. If you have a problem with that you can use the Farrel base they are also very good and made of steel . If you are going to shoot mostly long range and not much at shorter range opt for the .20MOA base taper, the only thing is you will be almost out of adj. at 100yds . Go with the tapered base and just use the 0 inserts in your scope rings . :thumb:

I would recommend the 20 MOA Warne base. While not as pricey as Badger I think the quality is just as good. They are both made of steel.
Personally I like the Badger Max 50 rings, nice way to add weight right over the action), but those made by Glenn Seekins look pretty nice for thirty dollars or so less. No, you don't need super duty, but they sure look cool!

Read your Nightforce manual - it advises you to not use turn in,i.e. Signature) rings. And I like the Ken Farrell rings and bases. Check em out.

Just to add another choice....

I can highly recommend Glen Seekins' bases. I will never use Leupold mounts again and I'd really recommend a one-piece mount on a Remington action, the top of the action is never really round and the holes rarely line up). Even with Signature rings, I'd rather have everything straight. I'd also recommend that you bed whatever base you choose so that you can snug it down without bending it.

I do use a set of double dovetail Signature rings on a few of my rifles with Nightforce scopes
and as long as the base or bases are in a straight line with everything and they have been lapped there are no problems to deal with. The inserts will allow a little off anyways. I would not try to use any other double dovetail rings on any of my Nightforce scopes, lapped or not...
The EGW bases are usually 1 piece.....
Here we are talking about the Signature Z rings that attach to a Weaver style base, not the double dovetails.
No locktite is needed on the rings but is advised on the base itself after a good cleaning of the screw holes and the screws with alcohol........

Thanks for the advice.

Forgive my ignorance but, ever have any problems with an aluminum base? EGW looks like a well manufactured base. It may not be an issue but I wonder about the expansion and contraction rate and/or electralasis between disimilar metals?

Will a "weaver style" ring fit on a picatinny rail?

Thanks again.
