Ring Height for 50mm Objective on an Eliseo Tube Gun

I noticed my daughter's head position was wrong while she was shooting this weekend. (Prone/Any Rifle) The scope, 6.5-20x50 Leupold, sits in standard Badger Rings and the cheek piece set just off bottom. Her head lays across the stock and she looks through the top of her glasses. I think going to a tall order extra tall ring may help get her head and neck in a better position.

Those using a Eliseo Tube gun, what rings are you using?

Chris - With my Elisio R1 stock, and a 6.5-20x50mm Leupold scope (same as yours), I found that the Leupold extra-high (AR-15) rings allowed me to keep my cheek rest at the same height when I remove the scope and switch to irons on this particular rifle. This was the correct height for the cheek weld I was trying to achieve. I was a bit surprised to have to use that high of a set of rings, but it just worked out that way. I had that rifle at AEDC on Saturday, but didn't shoot it. I wish I would have known to show it to you.

Jim,

I suspected I will have to go this route. All of my rings are for traditional stocks but the tube gun places the rail so much lower with the bolt riding into the buttstock, nothing I have is high enough.

I guess I need to get her in behind it with irons and set the rear where it's comfortable, then measure from the top of the rail to the aperture to see what rings I need.

Thanks again.

Chris, are you thinking the scope is too low? (Something i find difficult to understand with a 50 bell)

I guess it is a tube stock issue?

BTW, 'Kota shot great, you need to come to F-TR before you start losing to your daughter in sling.

It's definitely a tube stock thing.

They're was a time I probably would have been in contention this weeked. Seems those days are behind me. I still have fun out here, especially now that she comes out from time to time. Watching her progress is so rewarding. Eventually she'll get me. That will be a great day.

My oldest will turn 6 in Feb, he doesn't know he wants it yet, but he's getting a CZ, though he may get it for Xmas.

If either of my boys even thinks they like this game as they get older an Anschutz rimfire, 10,000 rounds of Lapua or Eley ammo and a jacket are a given.

One THing I have noticed with my Eliseo stock that I use for FTR is that the check rest sits a bit far inboard so I have to roll my head over to the right to see through the scope. I remedied this by making my own cheek rest out of kydex that is laterally adjustable by about 1/4 inch. Now I don't have to tip my head sideways to see through the scope. BTW I used weaver low rings. They are 1/4 in from top of rail to bottom of the scope tube, and they are as absolutely low as I can go without touching the rail.

Chris, I may not understand but it sounds like the cheek piece is to low and needs to come up. I am shooting out of a sling and I have a similar set up as you describe (Eliseo stock with 8.5 X 25 X 50 Leupold) and I have my cheek piece fully up and then had to put a pad on top of that to get my eye in line with the scope. I am using a Bobro extended mount and it is rather high and I am considering going to an ARMS Throw Lever mount (low) to help with this. I will have the gun with me Saturday if you would like to take a look or have her get behind the gun. But do you really want to help her, you are just barely staying ahead.

Clyde,

You understand it. I use Badger Rings which are pretty low .88" IIRC. With the cheek piece the way it is she can't get a good cheek weld because the scope is so low. Even with a smaller head and high cheek bones.

Mason's idea of an offset cheek piece is a good one and would help. Matt Kubic has an offset unit on his from Steve K? Nice unit , I need to get Steve's contact info again and see if he has any left. .

I think a combo or maybe 1" - 1.2" high rings and an offset cheek piece would expect the ticket.

Come to think of it, if she could get her eye over some she may not need a higher ring. I may not have to change her position if we can get her eye strait behind he scope without canting her head. She seemed to do well with a low position. That said, she still doesn't realize she may have to adjust the handstop and butt plate each match. I was hoping her seeing he etch my new lenses with my iris would give her a hint but she's still focused on shot execution, which is probably where she needs to be focused. Hard to focus with a neck cramp though :)

Chris, you know you want to shoot F-Class. Just do it! and by the way you can sell me that walnut stock I have been working on cheap!........................Tim ::)

I have no problem going back to F Class when it comes to that point. Until then, I will re-learn how to shoot irons and get Kota up to speed. She's close.

You do excellent work AND you work cheap. .... I'm not seeing a problem ;)

You should bring out the Blue Bomber and shoot against her. If you're scared just say you're scared.

Here is a pic of her head position. Note how high her eye is as compared to her lenses. She swears she sees through them fine but I don't see how. I think part of this is she is cast off too far to the left and the way the cheek piece is now, the scope is too low for her to raise it and get a more upright head position.

Hey - I forgot to mention that I am also using one of Steve Knutson's replacement cheek rests. I just wanted to be like Matt.

That was the one I was thinking of, Jim. How do you like it?

I'm going to give one of Mason's a go and see how she likes it.

OK nothing wring with her position. It would be helpful to have the Decot shooting glasses with the adjustable nose bridge so she could move the glasses higher on her face. This is a common problem with shooting glasses; they do not fit high enough on the face and you look thru the top or over them. This is more critical if you use shooting glasses with correction. It is most noticeable in the sitting position. I have glued an ear plug under the nose piece to get them to ride higher. One other point, I can not be sure from the picture but she may not have the gun enough over the left elbow, be sure to notice. She needs a good bone supported position as much over the left elbow as comfortable.

Clyde,

These are the Decots. When I ordered she apparently didn't understand I wanted the hi/lo bridge so we ended up with these. I'll be getting her another pair.

I agree on getting elbow. She is still working through getting off the point of her elbow, etc. I work with her until the point she starts to get frustrated, then just tell her to get a good NRA ( checked with the eyes closed wiggle) and execute the shots perfectly. Worked out pretty well this past weekend. She had her best X count .

An elbow pad may help. I have a very thin elbow pad that I use sometimes and that may help her if she is getting discomfort on the elbow with the heavy rifle. If you try this try to find a thin elbow pad, a thick one brings in other problems. It does not look cool but you can glue a soft ear plug to the nose bridge of the shooting glasses and it will get them up some and help a lot.
