Rimfire chamber specs

Steve although you seem to come at this with a scientific approach , it's a little , ok a lot short sighted . Your a male human , so am I , we eat sleep breath etc . Will we both live to the same age ? It's a little too simplistic . Too many variables with the barrel alone . Not to mention time between shoots , humidity ,condensation in the barrel etcetera .

Not necessarily. I have located a Copperhead action although I am thinking it might be put to better use.

What started out as a Silhouette rifle project has turned into an experiment which may or may not prove useful to me or to others.

If you really want to learn things buy a lathe and milling machine and start doing your own rimfire chambering. Oh, and a bore scope. IMO , indispensable for the serious RF tinkerer.

I have found an excellent discussion of this topic on another forum so I will be heading over there.

No, center-x is midgrade. Kevin shoots midas + and x-act.
I bought some Midas + to try but really didn't give it a good try out. I've got enough CenterX and Eley Match EPS to last at least 2 years so there was really no point except for curiosity.

It's funny, I bought the stuff at a local pawn shop/gun shop. I couldn't believe they had the stuff on the shelf. $20 a box was outrageous but for a one shot try out it was cheaper than $15 a box and shipping.

Through chronograph measurements I've observed a good deal of overlap between the Center X and Midas ES and SD; some of the best was Center X. I wonder if their grading procedure holds up for 100 yards where ES is critical or if they arbitrarily downgrade the ammo based on the market demand.

With my 40x i can see the difference between xact and midas at 100. If you weight sort center x it seems to behave exactly like midas at 100

The Center X I've seen the past couple of years is so close in weight there isn't anything to sort; much better then Eley EPS. Again, maybe they are downgrading the good stuff as Center X.

I know im a lapua fan. Im not connected enough to get decent eley so ill pay the same for midas or a bit more for xact and have a better chance

You can buy 2 barrels made consecutively and have both shoot different. Cutting a chamber to think it will shoot a certain ammo the best will be as fruitful as a unicorn hunt.

Your last two posts caught my attention. Would you please tell me if the 40X you are using for 100 yards still has the factory shop rem. barrel, or did you replace it with a custom barrel?

Thanks
Jack

Factory straight heavy in a br stock and bix'n andy trigger

I'm glad that was your answer.

In my experience, and with other rifles that I know about, most factory chambers shoot well with the good Lapua or Federal or RWS. By "factory chambers" I am talking about 40X, Win 52, Anshultz, etc....in other words, the better semi-custom rifles.
Sure, some of them will also shoot good with Eley. But the point is that I have seldom found one that would shoot Eley good, but not Lapua also.
My whole point is that these semi-custom chambers, IMO, have chambers with SLIGHTLY larger dimensions than a custom barrel chambered specifically for Match or Tenex.
The last 3 custom barrels I have shot were chambered for Match. They shot best with the right lot of Eley. The other premium ammo brands shot OK, but there were some extraction problems and vertical that I couldn't tune out....and I blame that on slightly longer case length and/or taper on the Lapua and other brands.

I am like you in that I am not high on the food chain for the access to the best Eley lots. By the time I get to testing, I just hope to get the best of the rest. So far so good, but 19 dollars a box for what is left over is getting hard to accept. You are fortunate that your rifle likes the Lapua. The next barrel for me will not be chambered just for Eley.

Since I am the match director at our club I have considered various schemes to require the cheaper ammo. Either a separate Center X challenge class or ???? The Eley pricing is definitely hard to accept. My last purchase of new Eley was probably 5 or 6 years ago. When it's gone and my last 2 bricks of Center X then I will face the music and make a decision about what to buy next.

As I look at the various experts and the Opinions, I see nothing referencing how Bleiker & G&E 'optimize' for either Eley or Lapua brands. Any new views on those brands?
