Rimfire Ammo for Small Varmints?

  1. What is the best ammo to be used in a semi for accuracy up to 50yd and reliability to cycle rifle and fire and take out the varmint?

That is a million dollar question.

I am no rimfire guru but have shot a round or two. The gun will tell you what it likes.
Must be the reason I have as many types of odds and ends of .22 ammo as stars in the sky, lol. I had a lot of various boxes of spendy match ammo, much of it no longer made or no more of that lot number. No sense in start liking some when it hasn't been made in 20 years or there is only a hundred or so left in that lot number.
So I give it to the kids to shoot..........

Find what the rig likes and stock up in that lot number. That is NOT hoarding.

You are going to have to try several brands and weights in your rifle to determine the answer to your question. Every rimfire fire will shoot one or two the best. Sit down, try several and see what your rifle shoots the best, then go for it.

I found Winchester 333 bulk packs the most accurate discount ammo in a Kimber I used to have. I shot prairie dogs with Aguila super maximum to acceptable effect.

The aguila super shoots good out of a rifle I have which is very picky.... To the OP you just have to test with Rimfire it's a funny animal...

If tree squirrels are considered small varmints, I’ve had many years of success with sub-sonic hollow points. That satisfying thump of a solid head shot is quite addictive.

I find standard velocity and sub-sonic 22 ammo to be more accurate 100% of the time. Some of them will cycle a semi auto and some won’t. Ammo testing is half the fun of rimfires anyway.

The newer Win Powerpoints will not chamber in my Rem 541T. the old silver box stuff worked great. I switched to CCI Velociters.

I like and have used CCI Quick Shocks for quite a few years in several 10/22's, prairie dogs, ground squirrels and such, quite positive results.

No-one mentioned match ammo. I have a bolt action Marlin/Anshutz model 64. Eley Black Match 20 shots in 3/4" at 50 yrds. Rem Hi Speed Hollow Point 1 1/2" groups at 50 yrds. There is some more common cheaper ammo called match grade never tried it. A 22 RF cartride looks like such a simple cartridge it's hard to believe the difference in accuracy. Is it just better qality control making the simple bullet?

My 10/22 loves the CCI mini mags. The thing is during the shortage I bought whatever I could find so I've got 1,000's of rounds in 18 different brands.
