Righties with LBLPRE....ANY FEEDBACK?

Just thinking about a how well a left bolt, left port, right eject setup might work on a benchrest setup for a right handed shooter and wondering if any of you guys have tried it and what you think and how it has worked for you?
Thanks much

I've seen a guy shoot that way. He simply used a left hand Remington and shot right handed. I thought it strange, but he was quite comfortable sitting there, cycling the bolt, reloading, etc. It was not ejecting, but single loaded.

It would be slower. You would have to use your left hand to open the bolt load a round then close the bolt. Faster to use both hands.

You would find it easier to cycle the bolt and keep the rifle in position on the bags because your right hand would not leave the stock grip. This would make the gun more stable. Right hand, right bolt means you have to hold the stock with you off hand, cycle the bolt back, take your off hand off the stock to grab a round to load, back on the stock and right hand close the bolt...then re-find your hand position on the grip and trigger. That's what I do now...you get used to it, but it could be better!! Good shooting.

You may well be right Malibu, but in my mind the more I go over it and imagine it, it seems more and more like it may actually be faster. The right hand is used to push the rifle back to battery and the trigger finger will not need to find the center of the trigger and I don't think there would need to be as much head movement if its set up right. Appreciate your comment though and could be mistaken I know. Hope to hear from someone who has actually tried it.

Pretty much my same thinking here also...thanks for reply.

Very nice indeed and Thanks. I can't help but try to imagine this same scene without him having to move his head each time he cycles the bolt though....just me

A lefty (handed, not politically) buddy used a right-handed setup for his long-range BR matches to great effect. Won the 2002 (?) NBRSA 1,000y class in Byers, CO if I remember correctly.

Very good alternative. You keep your head in position, your grip hand and trigger finger in position, and merely cycle the bolt with your off hand. It seems to be much quicker and more efficient.

In a conventional setup, your off hand is pretty much squeezing the bag, or otherwise not doing much at all. I think the OP would be pleased with the alternative, provided you can find an ambidextrous stock, so to speak.

Sounds very counter natural to me, since I'm right handed and use a left port, right bolt, right eject on both my B.A.T. actions. I want a natural flow based on the way I do things normally.

The issue is that what you do normally might not be the most efficient. I am a right handed shooter and am building a LBLP setup. I know this will take a while to adapt to but I believe the benefit will be improved consistency in the long run. I am an F class shooter so admittedly speed is not my primary concern. Given that the benchrest game has different requirements, the tolerance for changing your method of shooting may vary.

Having said that, the current F T/R National champion is a right hander with a LBLP setup.

I'm right handed and have RB-LP-RE and RB-LP. The last 2 I had built I have contemplated the same LB option and I just can't get myself to do it. I have a hard time picking my nose with my left hand and just haven't done it. :)

I think ideally if a guy could get used to it then it would be awesome. My gunsmith shoots left handed and he has a RB-RP and it works great for him.

Good luck!

I am not sure why he picks his head up. I don't when I shoot, I am watching through the scope while I am reloading.

Seems to me that nose picking is LNLH and RNRH, i.e. dual ports and dual bolts.

He picks his head up to look at his flags and what the wind is doing on the field of fire.If you are just looking thru the scope you miss a lot of what is happening and going to happen.

I set my flags so I can see the farthest ones in the scope, and I shoot with both eyes open to see the rest.

What happens when the wind changes 3 benches away and you did not see it coming?
I only shoot long range br. I can't see the flags at longer ranges with my eye sight. Ideally I will have 2 or 3 in the scope, and maybe a couple more up close for my left eye. That is enough data for my brain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTHjjCcr_44

OP, I have a left handed friend who uses RB, RP actions. He likes it very much, I have watched him shoot and I promise you it is considerably slower. I may be off base though, I assume you want to shoot br where speed is a factor. If your shooting other disciplines, the LB LP may be the better choice.

Thanks all for the excellent thoughts and insights and I'm glad to hear some of the winners are using this kind of setup and doing well.
Thank you also Alex for the great vid again and your experiences with your friend.
It's always fun to consider new ideas.

Out of curiosity, I built a BR setup on a left hand ( I'am right handed) repeater action. (I don't shoot compitition) Dropped it in an ambi stock to see how it felt. I liked it so much that I picked up a right hand thumbhole BR stock and set the action on a Whidden V Block. Plugged the right bolt handle cut and recut it on the left side.
Took about 5 minutes to get use to it and from then on, it's more natural than my right hand rigs.
Right hand stays in the thumbhole for stock control while the "free" left hand works the bolt and feeds ammo.
You're not doing anything with your left hand anyway.
Shoot one like that for a while then go back to a right hand rig? Feels real strange. Now I like the left hand rig better than my right hand rigs. Never considered a right eject setup but that would work too. 8)
