Right Hand shooter needs to be able to use Left Eye

Good Morning,
My Dad, has lost his sight in his right eye and at 74yrs old he has tried but cannot shoot left handed.
I read an articale on the main web site about Mr. Jeff Cochran and how he raised his scopes high enough to be able to use his left eye while still being able to shoot right handed. I tried that this weekend on dad's Rem 700 308, he has a old Shepherd scope on this rifle.
After mounting a rail I then used 1/2" risers then extra high Burris rings to get the height he was comfortable with.
Well I ran out of elevation adjustment while trying to zero the rifle.
My questions are:
Should I try another scope?
Should I look for a mount to off set to the side so when he shoulders the rifle he is looking through with his left eye?
Should I try a 20moa or maybe a 30 or 40 moa base?
any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Sam.

Two of my friends have the same issue. Both had a plate fitted to the top of their actions which offsets to the left. They then fitted normal scope bases & mounts which sit somewhat higher.

The trick is to work out what offset & lift is needed so that your father can cheek the stock normally.

Hey yall thanks for the information and help.
Going to try a lower ring combo and see if that gives us the elevation.
Dad is actually a lil more comfortable at this height.

Thanks again and I'll update yall over the weekend.

Friend of mine, gone now, had a cut-out dug into his stocks. Then he just laid his head into that cut-out and used his left eye.

it sure worked and involved little to no cost while allowing him to enjoy his old rifles and shotguns.

Get in touch with Doan Trevor. He's primarily a stock maker, but he's an excellent machinist as well. He's built some offset sight mounts and more than likely can make you an offset scope mount assembly. Just google Doan Trevor. He's a heck of a nice guy and does a lot for the shooting sports.

Trap shooting they made what was called a cripple stock. it was made with a off set butt .stock.. I think it could be made for shooting a rifle. Larry

This fix is not the nicest looking but a friend of mine lost his right eye he would take and hollow out all his stocks so he could rest his chin over the stock and he could use his left eye He was a hell of a shot with rifle and shotgun didn't hamper him one bit

I will offer this...

I'm right-handed but left-eye dominant. So when I started shooting long guns (shotguns), I always shot off my left shoulder.

So, in F-Class, all my guns are setup as Left Bolt Right Feed. Works great as I'm able to shoot with both eyes open and use my most dexterous hand to feed and pull cartridges. On the dual port guns with ejectors, I have them kick the spent cases out the left and into my hat.

Good luck!

A friend once told me about shotgun cripple stocks and said he had seen a rifle done in the same way just the previous week. It is a different looking solution, and he actually took me to the range to meet the guy that had such a stock made for his rifle so that he could use his left eye after losing the sight in his right eye. It worked like a champ for this guy, but I have no idea who built the stock.

A friend of mine had same problem.. He bought a mt. that fits a Davidson base (for Kelbly type rings. He installed a Davidson base on the left side of this offset mt. and used the higher Kelbly rings. I have no idea who made the base. The people @ Sinclair may have that answer. Also , my friend (Dennis Brame) won a lot of 1, 2, and 3 hundred yard BR matches w/this setup.

I lost vision in my right eye. This allows me to use my normal stance.Works.

Fascinating. Is it that your dad is too stubborn?
A action rifle RO noticed I was a wonky shooter (RH / Left eye dominant) and suggested I start shooting left hand only. All but two of my rifles are RH.
Pistols are hard, but rifles were relatively easy, to the point that I cannot remember what it feels like to shoot a rifle right handed.
Hand him a 22 with peep sights and have him retrain the muscle memory!

I shoot pistols holding them in my right hand, using my left eye, with a two handed grip, with no problems whatsoever. The use of my left eye, for all of my shooting is a dominance thing. I can shoot a rifle right or left, but left eliminates the eye strain. For pistol shooting, all I am doing is turning my wrist a little and moving my hand slightly to the left. which is no big deal.

I have a pattern for a "dogleg" stock that puts the scope in front of the left eye. Just need to find some one with duplicator.
