Right Eye Blind/Right Handed Rifle

My cousin learned to shoot right handed but now has gone blind in his right eye. Rather than learn to shoot all over again left handed with all of the limitations on available rifles and/or try the awkward operation of operating a right hand bolt action rifle left handed, does anyone make a set of bases, sights and/or rings intended to allow a shooter using a right handed bolt action rifle to handle it right handed, while looking through the scope with the left eye?

Wow that is a long sentence!

R.W. Hart of Nescopeck , PA offers an offset base for which you can mount standard rings.Current design is universal ....which means you must adapt it to your firearm.

I am left handed and lost the use of my left eye when I was a young man. I tried offset scopes and even an offset rifle stock. Both were very awkward and felt like they made the rifle off balance. It was relatively easy to teach myself to use the right side for both rifle and shotgun. I do still shoot a pistol with my left hand though. There are many good left handed actions now and your cousin would probably adapt quickly.

Weaver makes offset adapters that fit on weaver style rail and the weaver mounts will slide over the offsets. I got a pair from midway, but they are cheaper on ebay. Mine are a 45 degree angle which raises the scope but that might not be a bad thing.good luck, Mike

Slowshot, The thing you probably don't want to hear is it is much better and easier to just switch over to shooting left handed. Your friend will "NOT" need any special equipment like a left handed action, right works just fine.

I was forced to change over to left handed shooting early. I am right handed but shoot left handed, it was very easy for me to make the switch, as I didn't have a choice. Cripple stocks and off set scope mounts are a huge handicap to any shooter. Trust me on that one I have tried them all. Just have him switch it's easier than anyone would think...

I must relate a quick story: I have a kid (18 years old, but still a kid) who works for me from time to time. He always showed an interest in shooting my Benchrest Rifles. On range day I would let him go with me and after I was through shooting I would let him shoot some. It was sad really the boy couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside. No way could you call what he was shooting groups they were patterns and not even good patterens at that.

One month some time ago he wanted to go with me to a Mid Range Benchrest Match and try his hand. We were shooting at 600 yds and I shot first, my 1st group was 1.667" on the first target and I ended up with a 4 target agg of 1.993". Brandon's turn came and since I shoot left handed he said: "Lets just leave the rest and everything set like it is and I will just shoot left handed too." I tried to tell him that since he couldn't shoot anyway that we needed to change the set-up for him so that he wouldn't be at a bigger disadvantage than he all ready was. He wasn't having it and he did in fact shoot left handed, and that would be for the first time in his life I am sure.

After it was over and the targets were scored they anounced the match winner. 1st came the small group that would be Brandon with a 1.227" He also won the match with an agg of 1.850". This is a club shoot and we always have a pot for closest to center X. Brandon missed winning that by .009".

Have your friend give it a try never can tell...

I had the same problem and i made the switch to left. I did it by shooting trap in the winter left handed,by spring it was a little easer. and i built a left handed rifle and never looked back. To get a off set scope mount made and how they recoil out of balance, you may injure the good eye. go left handed all the way, i'm 69 and i made the change..... jim

Slowshot,

For iron sights, it exist a light prismatic periscope who allow this offset. It does not impair the rifle balance, nor the canting issues.

Maybe the same device exist or could be adapted for scopes?

Similar story here but I did not loose my sight, however I switched about 43 years ago from right to left do to a injury, of course I was just a kid so it was simple but about 15 years ago or so I started BR shooting and most everything caters to right handed shooters so I switched back, it is one of the most beneficial things I have ever done, now I can shoot any rifle either way and just as accurate either way, faster on the bench right handed and since I shot hunting rifles for so many years left handed I am a little faster in the Field left handed, I have never owned a L bolt hunting rifle, only right handed and also it just doesn't matter if I am in the Field and see a deer or whatever I raise the rifle with whichever hand is the handiest ;) I think the switch will be easier then he thinks and it won't cost anything but a little practice and patience,...best of luck to your cousin with which ever route he takes.

Here is my story, I lost the use of my right eye in an industrial accident in 1991. For awhile I tried to continue shooting/hunting right handed by using various gadgets etc. and I even tried scopes with long eye relief so I could "bend" over and use my left eye while continuing to use my right hand as my trigger hand. None of this really worked. At first it seemed awkward to use my left hand, but I was surprised at how quickly I adapted. I suspect your cousin will too. The silver lining in this cloud for me was that in order to teach myself to shoot better left handed I took up target shooting and as a result I have found a sport that gives me a great deal of satisfaction. I still use and buy right handed bolt rifles. Although it can be a bit of a challenge cycling a right handed bolt rifle while deer hunting. what I have learned in these cases is to make the first shot count. My worst experience has been with right handed semi-autos, I sometimes get ejected brass and unburned powder glancing off my face, wear safety glasses. My best advice is to grab the bull by the horns and make the switch. Ron...

Agreed, I'm right handed but have shot left handed many times in practice (just in case those yotes show up on the weak side) It should be a fairly seemless transition with just a little time at the range.

As some others have said; it takes a little getting used to but it's really not that difficult to learn to shoot with your non-dominant side. I taught myself (it was handy shooting crows and coyotes without disturbing them by getting out of the truck on the ranch when I was a kid) and though I still shoot better right handed, I'm a respectable shot now with my left as well. It just takes practice.

I am left handed but have been shooting right handed rifles for years without any problems, I got my first left handed rifle a week ago and it's just as easy t shoot as the right handed.

it's not about the body, that is ambidextrous, the blockage is in the mind.. shoot with an open mind and you can shoot left and right handed equally

I am right-handed and shoot r-handed, but I don't mind at all shooting with a left-handed rifle, at all. Prefer it, in many ways.

He should just switch to the other shoulder. Trying to offset the scope the way you are asking about is going to create all kinds of problems.

Another possibility is to use standard risers to move the scope high enough to use the other eye.
