Rifle Opinion -- Sell Sako 6PPC or Re-barrel to 22 ARC

So I’m looking for some advice…. I have a sako vixen in 6ppc ( I believe that what it’s called ) I bought this for a mix of in formal target and varmint hunting , it works perfect I am happy with it. But as things happen I now have a very bad itch for a 22 arc bolt gun … I do not feel I need both, so the question is do I sell this and supplies and build a 22 arc as I feel a custom is the only possible way to upgrade from this sako. Or do I pull the barrel off this and rebarrel this rifle to a 22 arc? I know the later would be cheaper… but I hate to pull this thing apart so I’m here looking for advice …

In my opinion it would be a tragedy to tear apart that Sako 6PPC (arguably the best factory target rifle ever made, and undeniably a classic rifle from an era we will never see again) to just hop on the next fad cartridge bandwagon. Either keep and cherish that Sako for what it truly is or sell it to someone else for them to enjoy and start fresh with your 22 Arc project.

I should add at some point in my rifles life some one managed to crack the stock 100% functional how it is … very solid I’ve never had an issue … and the barrel was threaded…

With the stock cracked and the barrel threaded it lost it collectors value.
You could have a custom barrel turned to match the factory contour.
I'm not sure what the rim diameter of the 22Arc is.
If money is no problem go custom.

You could always have another barrel spun up and use it as a switch barrel rifle. Easy peasy. So, if for some reason, the new chambering does not appeal to you it will be simple to go back to the 6PPC. Have fun with it.

I have one in 6PPC also. It is the most accurate factory rifle I have ever owned followed by an iron sighted Swiss K32 and a FN produced Safari grade 308 Norma Magnum produced for Browning in the early 1960's.

What I would do is contact PacNor barrels. They can rebarrel and produce one of the awesome BR quality hand lapped barrels in the same contour as your current if that's what you want.

I'm not sure if they have the reamer to do a .22 ARC but you would be pretty well served by a .22 PPC, with a barrel twist determined by the length of the bullets you primarily want to shoot. --Greg

I have a Sako 6PPC and 22PPC, both are sporter barrel repeaters and are very accurate. When I first read your post my first thought was “Don't tear it apart” but after your comment about the barrel being threaded and the stock cracked I would change that sentiment. It’s lost the collectible aspect but it’s a fantastic action to build on.

I would not cut up a good Sako Vixen for that.

If anything pick up a 22PPC Sako and you’ll be shooting basically the same cartridge without the endorsement of the Hornady Marketing Machine.

Couldn't have said it better myself... I also owned a Sako 6ppc and am kicking myself for letting it go...
Why would op want to go from the most accurate cartridge 6ppc from 100-300 meters to a cartridge that is not as accurate. Maybe I'm missing something.

I see from a different angle, why have an ARC that's a Hornaday rebrand of a Grendel when you can have a real Grendel. I have one of each sitting on the desk I am typing on and the Grendel looks to me to have a little more case cap.

I’m not using this rifle to compete , just some of my own target shooting and varmint… that said two reasons I’m interested in the arc over this is one .. capability to run heavier bullets… next is brass… now I understand I can get ppc brass and it is good … but I have a hard time justifying the price of it, but I do like the cartridge hence I’m just hopping to a different version of it ..

If you are going to build something similar to the sako like a wood stock etc, rebarrel the sako. If you are wanting a chassis, 20 moa rail, 34mm scope etc do the custom. I love walnut and blue, but I certainly find a chassis etc easier to get comfortable and shoot well.

If I rebarrel the sako the barrel is the only thing I would change… I wouldn’t think of it if I didn’t like the rifle itself…

I have a Sako single shot A1 6mm PPC USA heavy barrel. I love shooting it but don't want to burn the barrel out on it. My plan is to remove the barrel and replace it with another but keep the original ( 600 round count ) barrel. If I want to return it to original condition in the future I will just reset the original barrel on it. There will be no work done on the action or stock.
